Lots of complaints on social media about this wont run on an A500... quite baffling really as even the arcade version used two 68k cpus and some beefy video hardware.

Purists will complain about anything unless it runs perfectly on unexpanded A500s.

Excellent stuff  ... but I was surprised to hear that the static background graphics (of all things) caused a slowdown so he chose to disable (for now). Any theories why a static (well, ok, sidescrolling) bitmap in the background would cause a slowdown?

im not sure , you could be right but some stages crawl along - the Stone pillars being a good example. however in general it runs around 25 fps or so.
maybe some tweaking will see performance improve

You know - some ppl are "followers of holy chipset" ! For them all kind of 2D games are possible on "naked" A500 !

It could be an idea to put the original HW specs into the description of the Youtube presentation Video of Cannonball, just to clarify things to those people.
