Yes they work, and cost like $5. Yes you can attach Terabytes of HDD to the VAMP this way.
|
And 1TB would be like 10 or 12 partitions if you chose to use the entire drive!! Lol!! xD Reminds me of when I had my first 40GB hard drive and didn’t know how to use SFS or PFS3 xD I had like 8 partitions

| Though if it’s a ”1TB” drive, you’d end up with like 800 actual gigabytes... since manufactorers cheat with the capacity and completely ignores the binary calculations. So I guess on such a drive you’d end up with 8 or 9 partitions

This happens if you format it for Windows. It is a 1TB drive, all the lost space is used by Windows to overcome legacy limitations and get everything to work. I read a long technical paper about this once and don't remember all the details. With the coming AmigaOS 3.1 update and support for >4GB drives this won't be a problem.

There is in fact some lost space with MS formatting, the root cause with Microsoft is that they (even after >20 years of standardisation) still just don't get their maths right, however. According to the SI standard 1TB = 1000 GB = 1000 x 1000 MB = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 KB = 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 Byte (Terabyte, Gigabyte, Megabyte, Kilobyte) and 1TiB = 1024 GiB = 1024 x 1024 MiB = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 KiB = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 Byte (Tebibyte, Gibibyte, Mebibyte, Kibibyte) Microsoft calculates with (latter) binary multiples but displays the result with (former) decimal units (which is just plain wrong), thus the discrepancy (on a Terabyte medium, about 10%).

| Hi, just joined to say this about large hard disks: You can already use big hard disks with Amigas with the right filesystem and device driver. I have an A4000/030 with 1 TB (931GB) IDE hard disk and the largest partition is about 700 GB IIRC. You just have to use a filesystem that supports large partitons like PFS or SFS, AND a device driver that supports 48-bit LBA like Don Adan's scsi device (http://wt.exotica.org.uk/test.html) Most of the trouble is using HDToolbox to create and edit the partitions.

| PFS3 doesn't work with partitions larger than 101GB due to some bug. Larger partitions (up to 1/2TiB) is supported with FFS v.45 (from WB3.5/3.9), SFS or FAT95.

| It's clear we will not see anything released by the years' end. No hard feelings there. But it would be nice to give us a bit of a status update regarding A500, A1200 & Standalone V4 as a little holiday gift :)

| There is hope for release of core gold 2.7 this year, I think. It will be the culmination of a stellar year for apollo team.

| V4 spotted in the wild: EXTERNAL LINK (scroll down to around 2/3)Nice to see that the new A500 cases will also be designed with the V4 in mind. :)

| I wonder what the keyboard solution(s) is(/are) for and A500 case mounted Vampire 4 standalone. The choice of placement of the ports within the case will also be interesting.

Would prefer a new 1200 case for the Standalone but a 500 case would be almost as good. Way more space in a 500 case though.......

| Well, I'll think about case if the V4 Standalone is released and I'm able to buy one. For now - I prefer to focus on HW I already have :)

| Any news on when the v4 will get released? At least some vague time window?Thanks... ;)

Likely before the end of this decade.

| So the V4 was announced "03 Aug 2017 15:56" It's now 7 months later. Can we get an update on any of the V4's ??? I'm holding off on the V2 as I want the extra capabilities of the larger FPGA chip size. Plus, I think the standalone V4 will be more suitable as my Amiga's are old and a bit flaky needing capacitor and other fixes. All my Amiga's are over 25 years old. I would rather go for new hardware, at least initially.

| The impression I have is that hardware prototypes are done, it just needs gold 3 as a prerequisite technology.

| Pretty sure that is the case for almost all classic Amigas out there, unless you have an Escom or Quikpak one, then it will soon be 25 years old.

As much as I would love more detailed news, I suppose it will come since 2.7 core release is done. Last ones I have seen was V4 x11 Protype booting and sysinfo, showing ~92 MIPS and ~37MFLOPS EXTERNAL LINK Also I do recall in one of monthly releases that a possibility of v2.7 core release for V4 was mentioned, but we havent seen it publicly. In products list, Vampire 500 V4 is only listed, but not yet availiable CLICK HERE That is all we "know" now. My lucky guess is that Vampire 500 V4 with some modified v2.7 core and stronger FPU could roll in quite soon, 1200 V4 maybe too, but standalone needs a modified GOLD3 core, so might be a longer route from here. As well as unified DIGITAL-VIDEO outpout, Pamela sound chip etc. for everyone. So patience is advised and abusing what has recently been released until these days. Also all V4 Vamps need a USB support, Ethernet driver, Dual Kickstart and few new tricks down the sleeve done right. So its quite a leap from current v2 era. Why it was announced so early then? I suppose hardware seemed ready and software (core/drivers etc.) work was a bit underestimated, as well as time to do 2.7 core for V2 generation giving them reduced FPU and AMMX2 as well as X12 core. Trouble is core development needs a lot of fixing, as we can see by just looking numbers of public releases. V4 branch might need a lot more tweaking and testing before it can go public. v2 cores - public releases - version - release dates GOLD2.7 4906 2018-03-02 GOLD2.5 3686 2017-07-30 GOLD2 3686 2017-01-23 GOLD 3469 2016-09-05 SILVER9 3409 2016-08-03 SILVER8 3394 2016-07-29 SILVER7 3351 2016-07-10 SILVER6 3229 2016-05-16 SILVER5 3227 2016-05-06 SILVER3a 3181 2016-04-04 SILVER3 3176 2016-04-03 SILVER2 3053 2016-02-28 SILVER1 2952 2015-12-25
