Hi Vojin,

Thanks for your very helpful information!

I will have to wait until I get my V4 and try the available options. It should be relatively easy to setup different memory cards with the versions I want to try out.

I will definitely have AROS because I think this is a very good option and well worth supporting.  I like that it is free, of course, but also that it is actively being developed.  This is real spirit!  It may not at the moment be as efficient as it could be, but with Apollo team working on it, then it can only get better.

ApolloOS, I guess this is CoffinOS: This seems to be a very good option, especially if it is 'currently' faster than AROS.

I can see the benefit of having OS3.1.4, especially coming from an Amiga1200 with OS3.1.  It doesn't come with all the features of the other's but is probably very fast.  However, with Aminet, as you say, maybe would get the best of both worlds.

They all have their pros and cons, so it really is a matter of trying them out and seeing which suits me the best.

To think, 33 years ago with great excitement, I bought my first Amiga, the A500. Now, all these years later, I am going to be buying, with great excitement, another, new Amiga machine!

What incompatibilities are these Vojin? I've been using OS 3.1.4 for a year and a half now and I haven't come across any.

Since I dont use AmigaOS 3.1.4 I can rely only on info other users have posted. Sometimes old software does not work right or outright.

Some are noticable on long Amiga.org thread
  EXTERNAL LINK
  Some is with new icons
  EXTERNAL LINK
Some seems to be related to BetterWB
  EXTERNAL LINK
Its not a major thing, I am sure that via updates it can be solved.

And is nothing that strange in Amiga land.

As far more interesting reading, OS 3.2 and beyond EAB link
EXTERNAL LINK

Absolute nonsense. I have followed those threads and there is nothing in them to suggest any sort of game breaking incompatibilities with old software, other than reporting of some bugs, an issue that can happen with any Amiga OS development.

In regards to the thread related to icons: I have run Scalos on OS 3.1.4 with those icons with no problems, but I had to install it manually. CWB installer script and software hasn't been updated in years and is dead as far as I'm concerned. I created my own CWB from scratch to mirror the features of the original, but with using BestWB and updated programs instead, and not a single issue.

OK, I am glad its all sorted out. I never said that there are "game braking incompatibilities" and I am sorry if mentioning incompatibilities sounded harsh - it looked liked that by reports.

What can we know of expected OS 3.2 features?

Love when guys go like "just do this and that" its so easy, you know the amount of work is needed to do this ?.

If you think this is such a good idea why don't you do it yourself and make your own clean and pure OS?.

I love coffin just like it is a collection of abandonware, and don't think that most folks give fuck about all this dead company's vintage software.

Folks that like to talk about legal and illegal stuff just create a forum called 'arm chair lawyers society' and go there to loose your own time. Stop bothering other people that don't care.

Guys,

Why quarrel any yell, quoting numerous mis-readings out there on Amiga forums?

Let us make Coffin 100% legal!

If the Coffin Curators tailor the OS technical-wise, they also ought to do this kind of clean-up.  Only what needs be done is:

  - Coffin software list (a txt file)
  - excluding all freeware software (putting justification to the text as one-two rows each)
  - excluding all shareware software which work as non-cracked binary
  - wipe all cracked shareware and/or replace with non-cracked version
  - the remaining ones (not sure how many would remain out): search > contact > permission to free OR license

Having all costs (if any would ultimately exist) would top up to the price of "Coffin KeySet Legalizing pack".

Apollo Team (or Coffin Curators) can sell these keys with some overhead contributing Coffin and/or AROS Vision.

  And lastly,

  - making Coffin require OS3.9 iso to install (exactly what Jan Zahurancik is doing with his AmiKit).

Ultimately, we would have all situation 100% clear.

I paid for my last V4SA (which is gone now) ca. 600 EUR yet in October, added price tag ca. 35 EUR for a single stupid 32 GB CF card, I really am eager to pay EUR 10 - EUR 50 for making Coffin legal, proud and great!!!

Let us not behave like this thrash Linux community back then 20 years ago, that were spending $ 2000 on a desktop but couldn't pay EUR 1 for a piece of software...

One more.  There's no such thing as "abandonware", its a "fact statement", not by any means a "legal statement".  Legally, all software is copyrighted per se, unless

  - the author(s) releases it in the public domain
  - the author(s) dies and 70 years passes (most EU / Polish copyright)

There's NO other actual event that might cause a copyrighted works stops being such.  Neither Coronavirus, not shutting down yet another company or e-commerce software store...

Who's the one to tell if somethings abandonware or not? In Coffin there are full versions of Payback, Napalm and Earth 2140. There are full versions of graphics programs and many other productivity software.
It is very arrogant to say that all this is abandonware and reason enough to give you the right to put it into your OS compilation.
Btw, OS 3.9 is not even abandonware, neither 3.1 but you're including it and you can't include it unless there's a clear juristical decision that clearly states that nobody has the ownership of AmigaOS.

I really like the vampire, but defending and spreading Coffin is piracy at its best.
Thats like committing crimes and justifying it by saying that its legal unless somebody sues me or tells me to stop.

I think that coffin benefits you greatly, because its a ready to go package that won't give users headaches about configuring the Vampire correctly. Its pretty vital for the image and user-friendliness of the card.
Instead you should rather create some solid documentation and tutorials about creating such an environment yourself.

Ever thought about cooperating with Amikit distribution at least and do it the right way?

Well the good news is AROS for the Vampire (Apollo OS) is coming and all this can be put to rest ... and there is no legality questions with AROS regarding the OS itself..

Who do you address here?

Our OS that we bundle and ship with the Vampire is called APOLLO-OS.
Its AROS based and legal and free.

i am not talking about Apollo OS/AROS.

In that specific matter I was adressing you and everybody else who said that Coffin is in the same grey area as AmigaOS 3.1.4 and that its ok to have pirated copies of games and software in a compilation, just because of your intepretation of abandonware. How would you feel if somebody pirated (portions of) your 68080 core, with an excuse like Motorola hasn't been producing 680x0 for years?

And btw, I don't think that it is legal to include a modified Kickstart 3.10 replacing all copyright marks and call It abandonware.

I don't know who's the creator of Coffin and I won't hold you or the Apollo Team responsible, but defending it is definitely the wrong thing to do.

The Vampire is such a professional and outstanding product - probably the best piece of hardware in the last 20 years - that puts you and the Apollo Team right at the Top of the Amiga Hall Of Fame. But how you handled "Coffin OS" and the kickstart solution is like cutting into your own flesh.

agreed.

Who is the "YOU" that you address here?
The Vampires that we ship come bundle with APOLLO-OS  = AROS based.
So please don't address me.

Regarding the OS 3.1.4 that you mentioned.
Isn't it true that so far is Hyperion was not able to proof they have legal ownership of OS 3.1.
If this is right, is then Hyperion technically not selling warez?

If you think that its immoral that some AMIGA fans share copies for free. How much worse is making revenue on selling warez like Hyperion seems to do?

I personally find it very sad to see in view dilemma the honest Amiga fans are.
Yes they can buy a few new games that come out like the cute slug game. But all the original Amiga title are abandoned.
So the only possible way to get and use them for the Amiga fan is via copy.

I also find the whole OS situation a real shame.
No one of the companies involved used to care for the OS and the Amiga fans.

I'm just saying that it would've been better just to be silent on this matter on behalf of the apollo team. i was not accusing you of being behind Coffin OS. But it leaves a bad taste if you defend it.

Regarding 3.1.4, I think that this is not yet decided as there's still a lawsuit going on which will clarify the legal status. In my opinion its just too early to jump to conclusions about what's warez and what's not.
Hyperion is one of the worst players in the amiga world and they did a lot of harm to the platform and im not ok with it that developers work for free and help Hyperion maximize their profit.

that would be 1000x worse, but its not yet decided whether or not they're selling warez

Basically yes, for most people its the only way to get their hands on those old titles.

at least users and developers do. Even if Hyperion is kinda shady, it was still the only option to make an OS3 Update available in the year 2018.

I'm having problems with the default screen resolutions.

*Fresh install and boot"

I've got a V1200 and a PAL Amiga 1200, hooked up with Digital-Out, and RGB Scart through an OSSC.

The default resolution isn't liked by my TV. I have to mess about and select 16:9 1280x720 50Hz in both Piccasso96Mode and ScreenMode before my TV will allow be to select "Just Scan", so I can see the whole picture because Overscan gives me an error that the prefs file is missing. Meaning I can't use the normal 16:9 mode of my TV.

Okay, with that out of the way. I have an OSSC, and I can see during boot that 50Hz is fine, but when the OS has loaded, it's pushing for 60Hz. If I try to load a game, the Hz are all over the place above 65Hz. The OSSC won't lock on, nor can I get a picture, if I connect the scart directly to the TV.

So, I'd like a real 16:9 50Hz from digital-out, so my TV can see it correctly, and not have to use "Just Scan" mode of the TV.

Then of course, I'd like the RGB Scart to do normal 50Hz as if it was a stock Amiga 1200 PAL.

I know the Amiga can do a good output through RGB Scart, because it was before I booted up Coffin OS R56.

I've only had my Vampire for a few days.
