So far the Coffin OS is supposedly suspect in legality, like most Amiga things these days.
I could round up a ton of adf images and put ithem on a card and sell to a few people.
  So what.

Most people's issue with it is that they have included software that is still commercially available. Stuff that isn't available any more or that developers have disowned or happy for it to be used for free is one thing. Software that is still available different. There has been quite a few requests from developers to have their software removed from the package.

The other issue people have is when people charge an excessive markup for something that is free. Like this guy for example... £29.99 for a £4.99, so is effectively charging £25 for a package downloaded off the internet which takes 4 mouse clicks to put on an SD card.

There's still alot of people in the Amiga community who support developers. If stuff like this goes on, then where is the encouragement for them to continue to develop.

In all honesty I haven't even looked at Coffin since it was known as ApolloOS as it was a mess, and a pretty bloated setup. And back the it had alot more stuff that has since been removed due to licence/piracy issues.

I'm personally for supporting developers and not those wishing to cash in on other people's work, whether it's the developers, or simply the people who put the package together and gave it away for.... FREE!!

(Oh and if course this guy's made 6 posts, all of which seem to be recommending this seller and how good it is, so looks a bit suspect that they maybe the one behind it)

Yeah that thought had crossed my mind as well.

His way over-the-top excitement about the website makes him sound like that annoying Retrocengo guy on Youtube.

Mark, if all you're here to do is advertise an illegal website, then please kindly stop now.

If developers didn't have enough reason to NOT develop anything for Vampire... now they have ... especially because the Vampire team does not condemn Coffin and everything around it, but defend and promote it. That here is just the next level of signs to Developer: "Fuck you"

I talked with one developer (which software is on Coffin without being asked) He replied: "Yeah, that sounds about something Vampire Team would do". I mean I know Vampire Team has nothing to do with Coffin, but you should be aware, you get a stain from it.
He also said "I guess the only way to prevent that is to include a piece of code, that my apps do not run on Vampire anymore. I guess you can detect the Vampire somehow, then they will not try to distribute it anymore"

When you next time wondering why developer do not want to code for Vampire, remember that.

I mean, I'm really angry about that, I deleted my Coffin and made a plain 3.9 installation with tools from Aminet (little bit help from a1k.org), it works and is not that hard.

if people are willing to pay those prices for what amounts to nothing more than a SD card with a torrent written on it then they must have more money than bloody sense! Really annoys me that stupid people with too much money will do this because they make the rest of us look stupid!

I DO wish it wasn't such a royal PITA to install OS 3.9... I hate that you pretty much have to set up UAE to do it. And then you need to find all the various add-ons and such, and know what to include.  And in that regard Coffin is a serious godsend.

But I agree, we really should have a "clean" image to work from. If there was a base OS image and then some way to select what gets installed from there it would be nice (like being able to say "I don't care about videos or Mac emulator, or SCUMMVM, or demos, but do include WHDLoad, just not the games) that would be nice. But I'm sure setting up such an installer would be a monumental undertaking.

I own both 3.9 and 3.1.4, but since 3.9 is such a pain to install I find myself always setting up 3.1.4 since it's a lot easier to use. (REALLY wish there was a way to do 3.9 from ADF's instead of CD).

Yeah installing and polishing 3.9 in a proper way may be pita. Especially the boing bags, 3rd party patches, contributions that are considered basics today. Aros has been meant to adxress this as it doesnt require any installation.

I haven't found installing 3.9 any issue. I guess I done it so much over the years that I know the process all too well. My trick these days is to set it up once. Capture an image of it, and keep it stored somewhere. Then whenever I want a base 3.9 install that's ready to go, I just grab that and use it.

I find setting up the installs half the fun though.  I certainly would never pay someone stupid money to merely put someone else's image on an SD card. Anyone who does really needs to learn shit for themselves

What amuses me is that the team, as you put it, "defend and promote it" (it being Coffin), which includes software that isn't licenced or that they have no permission to include. Yet they then ask for people to help develop software for the Vampire. That seems counter productive to support illegally distributing some people's work one minute, and then asking for people to develop stuff the next.

I face similar issues in the 3D printing world. I release designs for free on a non commercial basis, then see people selling my designs on eBay for stupid money. When I know they cost barely anything other than a few hours of time to make. Now it just means I design stuff and don't release the files. The open source hardware community is as bad. People release designs for free that costs a few quid to make and then sell them for 200-300% mark up. This then puts people off releasing their stuff again.

No win situations really

Please, less drama. Do they sell and develop that os3 softwares?

Yes? I would buy it and demand it works on vamp or won't buy it

No? Shut up. Newtek Lightwave cares not for amiga version and many more expensive sws of back in the day.

I am interesting to hear what piece of coffin that is.

Coffin is not cause, but Amiga Inc and friends.

  Coffin is temp solution.

I will build my own distro but it's easier to adjust coffin. I have legal aos

Take dramma to aw.net, people love it and have no os4 news.

As rap masters would put it "save the dramma for your mamma".

That is why I love Coffin

One should be proud to be part of unofficial os3.10

Note: as soon as we get e.g amikit xe vamp or similar legal pack, coffin will be past.

Mmmmm, I looked in Coffin, I can't find any actually still sold software on it. I mean, sure, there is Roadshow, but this is a demo version, not the full version. Fore sure, there are old software not developped or not sold anymore, but actual software, I don't see them. Can you tell me some exemples, maybe I didn't saw them ?
I have the feeling that having a demo version, like Roadshow, will in fact increase the selling of this particular software. Amigans will pay to have the regular key and get ride of the limitation of the demo, don't you think ?

I hope he or they do not include commercial software still on sale

Cinema4D is still on sale (of course not on amiga)
Photogenics owner did not want distribution (I asked)

I agree, just a hint: you are also not allowed to add FREE software without permission to distribute. If it's not clearly stated in the License text that you are allowed to distribute, it's not allowed and you have to ask, that simple.

just take this Quote from Aminet.net webpage EXTERNAL LINK

While the files on Aminet are freely downloadable, they are not neccessarily freely distributable...

Of course you could discuss, why a developer would not want to have his/her software distributed, but that's not your decision. This particular developer even told me, if they would have ask him he would give the permission, but BEFORE using it, even would make a special version.

In my case it's a free software and I found an error, contacted the author and he told me that the one of Coffin is somehow broken. The one downloaded from developers webpage works, even it's the same version, but the one at Coffin, seems to be altered, at least some files are missing.

ha, I don't distribute anything, I just asked about some exemples, because as a user that browsed this distro, I didn't found any commercial one (but I didn't check every bit of it, therefore I asked).

So he Can give permission? I fully understand and agree, in reality many older sw have broken contacts and most of authors care not for they old sw.

At same time, I prefer distros like amikit xe where all permissions are granted.

However, in shumbling Amiga scene I like coffin avail vs not available.

Obtaining permissions as well as improved versions by authors would be great, be it small fixes.

If I was old developer and there was new aos distro, I would be inspired to support it.

I have legal photogenics. I am glad Amiga support section, but I don't see main company selling it, so in my book is abandonware. Same for Lightwave and cinema4d or real3d or dopus where companies fail to mention they ever had Amiga version.

I know copyright laws were never built for it. C owners needs to die and 50 years or so to pass to go public domain.

In it era, 5 years of no development should be enough
