Stop thinking in the 1990's. We need this space for movies, mp3, pictures and new games like Diablo.

    I toght you streamed that stuff today and Vampire is not up to HD video. There are also stuff like servers and you can even have storage space in the sky ;) Kind of smart for your media collection, pictures. How much storage space do you have on your phone? Lot's of internal storage space are not needed anymore unless you play recent games. How much is Diablo? 500MB?

We Are caught in between. On my a1200hd setup, 800mb was huge HDD.

Fact Is, riva plays old MPEG, not even DivX. Krave alone post DVD hq like 720p and blue Ray quality.

So, 32gb Is enough, but some 32gb cards have lower format space, so its wise to have 64gb one.

Files in the sky? Cloud Is Aldo server that Can Die, and se Had it with FTP Long time ago

I prefer my own dvd-dl 8gb slow burned backups.

You Can trust mega, apple, Google if you disire.

Here are the results from SysInfo - Drive Speed - for the 120 GB M.2 on IDE Adapter:
  vcontrol id 0 = 3.276800 Bytes/Sec --> (FastIDE disabled)
  vcontrol id 1 = 6.499438 Bytes/Sec --> (Fast)
  vcontrol id 2 = 8.024816 Bytes/Sec --> (Faster)
  vcontrol id 3 = Graphical glitches, Freezes, Guru, Reboot

  Sometimes vcontrol id 2 seems also be too fast and the A500+ crashed.
  But i am happy with "Fast" :-)

  It is round about the same speed as via USB Stick on the Deneb USB card in my Amiga 4k.

That speed vcontrol id 1 = 6.499438 Bytes/Sec --> (Fast) you have there is exactly the same speed I have with my mechanical HDD with fastIDE disabled. I have converted 800 x 600 mpeg movie and it struggles on my CF and it struggles on my DVD reader. When I moved that movie to the mechanical HDD it played smoothly on an 800 x 600 resolution
So the quality of the movie no longer have pixilation or boxes on them

Yes, an Amiga with M.2/SSD is not faster as an Amiga with a "normal" mechanical HDD.
Every HD can run much faster as any Amiga Controller.

So there is no difference, exept for noise and power consumption.

Btw. it looks like the exact speed values would be repeated in SysInfo.
I had already noticed that different hard disks with the same vcontrol values always displayed the same value in SysInfo.

There is significant aces speed in listing/reading/writing a lot of small files, main reason why I want SATA2IDE converter and real full SSD on Standalone.

I'm glad I found this thread.  It was helpful in clearing up some questions.  Going to go the M.2 SSD route via an M.2 to PATA adapter.

I am keenly interested in your performance in both speed (expect up to 18Mb/s) and access time. Please list SSD model. Its advised to buy one with auto trim/garbage/park.

  What exactly did you disable and where did you disable it?  The term "fastIDE" isn't in the lexicon of IDE.  With the A1200/A600 and the Vampires, PIO modes are used.  Each of these modes have a maximum theoretical speed and are described as "PIO 0, PIO 1, PIO 2......" and were defined in the early years of mechanical IDE drives.  The term "fastIDE enabled/disabled" is perhaps specific to a product but not the standard.  You can read about this here:

  EXTERNAL LINK
  What is interesting, is that the speeds reported by Theo don't align perfectly in every case (I assume he means Mbytes/s and not bytes/s).  Perhaps the CF cards low latency results in some unexpected performance gains that were not possible with mechanical drives?  Not sure.

  Then your CF card is garbage.  PIO modes do not have DMA so response times (seek and data retrieval) are going to be key to a smooth playback.  Mechanical drives have high seek times.  The CF card should have a clear advantage here so you experience is the inverse to what one should expect.  Hence I why I say your CF card is garbage.  But I don't doubt that your mechanical drive is capable of what you say. What helps your mechanical drive is the on-drive cache.  This would allow it to perform as well as a CF card on sequential reads, at least in the slow PIO modes which the Amiga/Vampire can support.  So you can expect smooth mpeg playback on a mechanical drive.  But also on a CF card.

A little more detail we can set shorter delay for the A500, V1200 and V4SA chip controller (Fast IDE 0 4 8 C), but those are not the real PIO-modes. Usually that's why older CF-cards will work fastest.

Hope future Vamp boards could have UDMA controllers and reach higher speeds. With PIO modes, it is what it always was. Its great compared to A4000 IDE speeds, but then again, ATA went further.

This is not a question of the Vampire but of the SCSI device of the OS.

The existing SCSI device of the AMIGA OS does not support UDMA IDE controllers - so this needs for to be improved.
The Vampire do technically support DMA!

  So, if someone improves SCSI.DEVICE beyond what was done so far for OS 3.9, OS 3.1.4 ...

  UDMA speeds can be reached?

  This is IMPORTANT for idea to use SSD via SATA2PATA or SATA2IDE.

  Bounty description and lets go P2P :) If it benefits all camps, the better. Would donate small amounths each month or two, until done.

------------P2P----------------

Hello,

please note that Power2People only accepts "open source projects".

Creating a "patch", which would technically be open source, that
modifies a copyrighted and closed source piece of software is an edge case.

We would feel more comfortable if someone created a "drop-in
replacement" for the referenced driver that is fully open source and
does not require closed source software to work.

----------Ideas-------------
Dear andre,

FLOSS AROS/free AOS3 replacement would be best. Problem is access to sources.
So we either ask for creation or we pay Barthel and Hyperion to do it, but demand closed
source improved driver as Aminet download.

If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

Earlier on in this thread it was discussed to write the 32GB image to the card and then if desired delete the last partition and create a bigger one, or simply create a third partition (probably my preferred option). And yet when I go into HDToolBox there is no space. My 128GB card just has 32GB with no free space on the end. Do I need to do something to adjust the reported space after writing the image to the card?

Thanks.

You could try fixhddsize from Aminet. I have not never tested it, I would prefer pack files from source partitions and create all partitions manually into new target and unpack files to there.

Works , very Easy Use 64gb CF and no problems. Fixhdsize do the Job. Extended CF Card with a new partition and finish.

Yep, just to confirm also - used fixhddsize and created a new partition called 'data' so I now have my entire 128GB available. Just be aware that DH2: is in use by the hidden backup partition. So while you can still use DH2 and AmigaOS will map to DH2.1 it's probably easiest to just go with DH3
