Hi,

Do these work on the Vampire IDE slot and are they recommended or needed?

Will be connecting a CF Card and a sata dvd burner (via two adapters).

Thanks

Jamie

If you mean something like the 4xEIDE'99 - I've been told it works on the V4SA, and probably also works on the V2 for that matter.

(I know one of the v4 testers has one on his V4...)

I am in the midst of configuring a slot loading dvd in my Checkmate with my vampire card. I have already purchased a few items to make this happen., but if I have to sink another $50 or $60 to make it happen, I think I will pass.

It *shouldn't* be required but you'll have to set the bus SOOOO damn slow to deal with the CD drive that it'll make booting off CF PAINFUL.

Other option is using something like a BudaIDE card in the Z2 slot (assuming you got that power/slot option with your checkmate) so they're on separate IDE interfaces.

But a buffered IDE splitter should prevent that  slow down right ?

Right. Put them on individual ide channels (different cables).

The slowest device will dictate the max speed.

The fastest speed for your CF card you will only get by direct attach it to the Vamp - alone!

As soon you put something else between the CF or something else on the cable/bus - you will need to set the speed slower.

So basically not worth it.
If you have a Buddha card laying around, might be.

So this is an area I am not up on.  So the slower device will slow the other device down even when not is use ?

Yes

Maybe you can envision it like this.
Imagine your and your grand-grand dad sit in the same room.
Imagine that he is around 120 years old, and can't hear a thing.

Imagine your wife now enter the room to say that "dinner is ready and that it is will be served on the veranda".

She will of course want that your grand grand dad can  follow
the conversation, therefore she will speak very very clear, and very slowly and very loud.

The same is on IDE..

"Commands" which tell the device to do something are send over the same wires as the "data".
You have to speak very slow and clear that all including devices - even the dumbest and slowest device fully understand every single word.

If you talk fast to the CF, then the CD drive will in the middle of the conversation start to yell "You ask me about the Battle of Midway, yes can tell you how they shot my plane down at Midway ..."

So if you speak to fast, bad things can happen on the slow device...

Shoot.
What other options do we have then, for vampirised A500?
I really wanted to add a CD/DVD drive to my Checkmate! (bought the face plate, the support shelf and the LG drive)
But I don't want to lost the speed of my CF card...

I would use one connector (larger pin IDE) on V4 to connect  DVD. Other smaller one could be used for SATA2IDE connected SSD and there would be no slow penalty then?

Alternatevely, IDEFIX could be put to one to provide buffering. Would it help?

What is speed difference (loss) if one puts fastest IDE CD/DVDs e.g. Teac DV-516E-A 16X DVD up to 48X CD?

but he dosnt have a V4 - if its a Vamped Amiga 500 then its a Vampire 2!

Yes, one question is mine.

Khm, on V2 would IDEFix solve the problem, or not?

The production release V4's only have the single 44 pin connector on them.

Then IDE fix is a must. I recall V4 schematics has 2 IDEs

Old CD drives need 12 Volt.
The V4 PSU does not provide 12Volt.

This means attaching an old CD drive to an V4 is not straight forward.
And there is the risk to toast your system if you do this wrongly.
Therefore this is not recommended.

I fully understand separate PSU must be supplied, and that SA one is phone one type, enough for the board and mem card. This means, like in old A1200 days, separate PSU for HDD and DVD should be supplied ... Think to provide more power in next model. SOCC type SD card combo is good enough for 90% uses, but there will always be those desiring "more power" configs.

Now, is it possible to have decent CD and SSD access time speed relative to PC IDE speeds? What would be best way to connect to SA?

Best is _NOT_ to do this at all.

With 2 PSU people can accidentally missplug this and fry their systems.
Therefore I clearly recommend NOT to do this at all.

For data exchange a uSD card offers more space and speed than a CD-Drive.

OK then no IDE fix, direct SATA2IDE SSD and an ISO mounter and prepared ISO (CD32/AmigaCD) or LHA files (CD backups)
