Slow SD Card

Hi.

Finally I got around to enable SD card support.
It works. But SysInfo only shows a data throughput of ~2.1 MB.
That seems a little low considering it's right on the Vampire card.
Is it normal?

From what I know it depends on the sd card itself. A friend of mine has 1 of his sd cards that reaches 10mb/sec (but only one). I tried a pair of sds and none of them went up the 3mb/sec.
It seems not dependant from the speed/class of the sd,.

I can't believe it depends on the SD card.
It was bought recently. It should be a damn lot faster than 2.1MB/s.
Pretty much the same I get from the old A600 IDE interface with a CF card.

The speed doesn't depend on when you bought the card.  These cards come in different speed classes.

See:  EXTERNAL LINK
You most likely picked up a cheap Class 2 card.  The speed Class is printed on the card and the packaging.  You need to buy a Class 10 card before you can expect 10MB/sec throughput.

Do you use SDcard in the SDcard Slot or SDcard via Adapter in the IDE port?

I have a 32 gb sandisk sd class 10 on sd slot on vampire and it reaches circa 3mb/sec.
A friend of mine had a sandisk one that had similar results but also have an old 8 gb one (don't remember the brand) that goes up to 10 mb/secs.

  SDcard slot.

And it appears I bought a Class 4 card which should have 4MB throughput.

EDIT: I don't mind the speed that much. Because the internal IDE port doesn't give me much more. So for backup purposes it's sufficient.
I'm just wondering...

Stick to the respected brand names when buying these cards.  Many of the off-brand or no-name cards are really Class 2 cards that have been mislabeled so as to make the buyer pay more.

It's a Kingston. I'd assume that is one of the respected brand names?

You misread this.
This means in a certain "test setup" it can reach this speed.
It does not mean that AMIGA OS or AMIGA files can reach this in real live.

Btw, for the SDCard port you can set different speeds.
Which speed did you set?

I would recommend to use Class10 cards always.

Yes, the SDcard is mainly targeted for easy data exchange.
Move pictures or MP3 files from PC or Camera.

I didn't know.
Set it to fastest with VControl, now I get 3.2MB.

SD Cards can be accessed using either SPI or a potentially faster 4 bit parallel protocol. SPI is easier to implement but limits the speed regardless of the class of card used so if this is the only protocol supported by the vampire buying the faster classes of cards may be a waste of money when used with the vampire (may still be useful when doing transfers with a PC though).

Yes, Kingston, Sandisk, Samsung are all respected names but of late, counterfeit Samsung cards have been showing up. If you're buying from a reputable retailer you should be OK.

Are there any downsides setting it to "fastest"?
