Will the Vampire core be updated to include the new Rom from AmigaOS 3.1.4

i don't see the point from the list of "features" they seem to be all 3party addons modules in rom and workbench that are already present on os3.9. Nothing really new seem to be added.

seems kinda redundant to be honest.

Not all of us use OS3.9 so the OS3.1.4 updates are welcome. Also most of the sources for OS3.9 are either lost or unavailable due to licencing problems so there won't ever be any more updates.
It has been mentioned that if sales for 3.1.4 are decent then further updates to OS3.1 will be made. It all depends on how much love it gets from Amiga users.

Where would I get 3.1.4, is that the same as 3.x from cloanto?

Its actually Hyperion who are sponsoring this update made by well know Amiga coders Thomas Richter and Olaf Barthel.

Hopefully we will be able to flash any ROM we want.

It appears to mostly bugfixes, optimizations and/or minor enhancements to 90% of 3.1

I consider the following to be major improvements:

-The FastFileSystem now supports long filenames, and has been designed to operate asynchronously, which means that the file system does not have to wait any more in a queue for each operation to be finished to perform the next one. This helps multitasking a lot.

-CrossDos now also supports long filenames and FAT32, and is also asynchronous by design.

-The cdrom filesystem has been enhanced, supports UDF format and, of course, also operates asynchronously.

-Scsi.device now properly handles disks greater than 4GB without problems, and is properly supported within the OS. I mean that all disk based commands and tools can operate both with large filenames and drives bigger than 4GB, which was never the case before (even in patched 3.9 systems).

After some testing, I can say that scsi.device 43.45p has always been faster.

But I see two big improvements with 3.1.4 as a "basic" user :
1) layers.library 45.xx now integrated in ROM. This speeds up window management quite a lot. UFO AGA bugs have been fixed and I consider this new library as now safe.
2) Shell-Seg updated and provides tab auto-completion feature even when booting without Startup-Sequence

Hi Renaud -

Are you a 3.1.4 beta tester? If so, very cool. I assume the Aminet patch that brought 3.9's scsi.device up to 43.45p is no longer needed in 3.1.4?

I wonder what is missing that accounts for the speed difference? Hopefully that feedback makes it back to the 3.1.4 developers.

Cheers!

I think their focus is fixing bugs and making things safe, not optimize for speed. I would be interested to know if the difference is significant or noticeable in daily use.

From various tests I made with different scsi.dev (43.43 from BB2, 44.2 from Doobrey, that 43.45p and even from Cosmos builds), 43.45p has always been the fastest. We could rerun them when AOS3.1.4 gets out to see. But as Allonsanfan, it's for sure not focus of 3.1.4.

Can you clarify the shell-seg update as there's a different view on the eab forum

You read it like me, it's not gonna make its way through final 3.1.4.
