Hello,

Is it possible to connect an SSD on Vampire IDE or only CF card ?

With this adapter for exemple : EXTERNAL LINK
Thanks for your reply

Yes there are several users which successfully use SATA HDs or SATA SSD with such adapters.
But I personally use CF.

I use similar adapter with V500+ and 500GB sata-drive. Might be the same or might not.

I haven't had any problems.

Has anyone tested directly connected PATA 2.5" SSD drives? Seems couple exists, example  being 128GB KingSpec 2.5-inch PATA/IDE SSD Solid State Disk (MLC Flash) SM2236 Controller.

On paper, they claim Read speed up to 107MB/sec
  Write speed up to 65MB/sec

The speed of the Vampire and which protocol it can use still limits the speed of read/write on the disk. Doesn't matter if it's an SSD or harddisk.

personally, i'm running a 32gig kingspec ide 44pin horizontal "disk on module".
effectively an IDE SSD.
EXTERNAL LINK
it was one of a set of three i got as "fall out" from part of a thin client to media centre conversion project. shame to waste it etc.

as it works, i have no plans to switch to a compact flash card, but every time i want to re-image, i have to manually re-layout the drive, setup the partitions, dump the new coffin drive image to an SD card, and then *manually* copy everything over from the SD card to the drive via directoryopus/workbench on the vampire. with 32 gig of data, and only late evenings at my disposal. this can take the best part of a week to complete.

i wish i ran a CF card on this so i could just plug it into a PC, dump the latest drive image onto it, plug it back into the vampire, and all working fine.

IF you are going to run a non CF system. i'd suggest getting a larger than 32gig drive, and having a partition above the 32gig default where you can keep your stuff, so you don't have to loose it or compromise each time you update your base partitions from a new version of coffinOS. have backups of your system drive for example, so you're not reduced to floppies or parnet to get system drivers back on for basic devices when you end up formatting your system drive to a new version of a filesystem.

I have no problems with speed, and i'm sure it's not the weakest link as regards getting data in or out. but the amiga doesn't run UDMA33/66/100/133 so you're going to be limited to pI/O modes. IIRC this maxes out at 16MB/s, but the vampires "fastIDE" mode seems to work fine with it and provides a tangiable difference in responsiveness between on and off.

one difference between flash and spinning rust is access latency. given the amiga has masses of tiny files this can make a big difference. i'll never run mechanical hard disks anymore in my machines due to heat, noise, size, power. The only real issue with flash memory is the potential "write amplification" problem - another reason to run compact flash cards; as when it dies, just plug in a new one.

just my experience. hope its of some use to someone out there.

Yes, its improved acess time and writing spead one can be looking for, IDE PIO certainly is an limit. In practice it helps booting and small size acess/copy greatly and overall snapiness of any OS. Adding to that small size, silence and low power use also help.

Managing Coffin is a bit tricky, but if AmiKit gets Vamp edition or Coffin gets some "HDD support" - SSD could be our main drives and Card slot used for easy data exchange.

Hope v4 Vamps could have at least full enabled IDE speed - UDMA6/7 aka ATA33/167

Notice that FastIDE mode is designed for CF cards only, so with an SSD you will only get about 3MB/s where a CF card will get you >10MB/s.

The limit is NOT the VAMP hardware.
The Vamp supports much faster - the limit is the AMIGA OS driver.

Surely, its AmigaOS imposing limits this days. Can this be solved somehow in the future? If we are stuck to IDE at least we should have full speed HDD/DVD.

Too bad, so for now its recommended to get IDE2CF and use a CF card on IDE slot.

it should work i used a 500 gigabytes sata notebook drive and a ide - sata adapter and worked fine.

Sata adapter and Crucial MX300 275GB SSD working; pretty fast Wampire500 V2+, A1200 3,9 Rom and UAE

Western Digital 128 GB SSD not working. Only workig WinUAE

Thank you very much. Such info should go to Apollo Wiki

If you dont mind, can you run Sysinfo/diskspeed or use Disk Speed v42 EXTERNAL LINK - on card slot (if you use it) and this SSD?

Tests are not perfect but at least give us some hint where we are.
