V600 Gold 2.7 Issuespage  1 2 3

I have finally had more time to test Gold 2.7 and have encounterd several issues and stability doesn't seem as good as 2.5. This is on a one of Kipper2K's V600 V2 boards (from batch 2), which has had the capacitors (C3 and C6) modified to 2x 0805 22uf 16v caps as suggested by Majsta (I measured the old caps after removing them and confirmed they were 10uf). Before modding the caps the it wouldnt boot past the Vampire boot screen at all.

  Cap Mod - EXTERNAL LINK

I am not running ApolloOS/Coffin as I personally am not a fan of it and prefer to build my own setup. Currently running OS3.9 BB2. And have the latest SAGA Driver 1.0 installed.

After flashing Gold2.7 the Amiga often fails to boots and frequently gives either a setpatch error or a software failure. The setpatch line has already been amended to "C:SetPatch NOROMUPDATE QUIET".

    Setpatch error - EXTERNAL LINK
Software failure error - EXTERNAL LINK

The Amiga also intermittently hangs/freezes or reboots. This can be easily replicated by loading ADoom, as this ALWAYS crashes the machine shortly after loading it when on Gold2.7. Once ADoom crashes it reboots the Amiga and just flashes the Vampire boot screen repeatedly. It stays in this state until the machine is physically rebooted.

    Boot loop - EXTERNAL LINK

When running Gold2.5 I do not experience these issues, the machine boots every time without issue, and I can play ADoom for as long as I like without any issues. It also rarely hangs/freezes.

After seeing someone else say that the x11 core wasn't too stable for them, but strangely the x12 core was I though I would also give this a go. After flashing the x12 core, it does not boot at all. it just shows the Vampire boot screen. If I hold both mouse buttons to get to the boot menu I just get a black screen and no menu. So appears my board really doesn't like the x12 core, so gone back to 2.7. And may soon have to go back to 2.5 :(. I also fear that this may hinder any chance of running Gold3 when it is eventually available.

Been tearing out what little hair I have left today and got nowhere. Any help or advice would be appreciated as I was under the impression that once the correct capactitors were applied then it should be fine.

How about trying the "SAFE" core?

Not used any SD cards on mine as stick to CF cards on the IDE and a PCMCIA adapter. Pretty sure I saw someone mention about SD cards though, may of been over on the FB group

Ok, so I re-seated the card yet again to rule that out. Installed the SAFE core, and done some testing and exactly the same issues occur. However, it has currently been running the VampireDemo2D_0.5e3 demo for the last hour and hasn't yet frozen or crashed.

Will do further testing tomorrow and hopefully be able to sort something out. Will report back findings.

Can you recommend any tool or utility to test with, or to do a stress test or anything else like that to test stability?

I've got a similar issue. I have a recapped A600 with an PC power supply which should provide a sufficient amount of power.
I've flashed Gold 2.7 and since then the system is unstable, it still was stable with Gold 2.5 (I also went back and forth between those two versions to verify).
My Vampire card is an early card by kipper2k so I've added two 0805 22uF caps to C3 and C6 each, however this did not change the behavior at all.

To be more specific on the occurrence of the crashes:
When I power on the machine after it was switched off for some time it usually does not get further than to the startup image, there is one brief HDD (i.e. CF) access, after that the system locks up. Usually when it locks up I for a brief moment see one or two black horizontal lines in the image which disappear again immediately. I can power down and up the system several times and the same happens over and over again - till it "warmed up" a bit (after 5-10 minutes) - after that time the system becomes more stable and even works for hours (I can also switch it off and on and it boots as it should). If I power it off and let it rest for some time the it will not boot anymore again.

I did not try the x10 core, since I do not have an USB blaster (yet).

i find i have to reboot once or twice before it stablizes and often wondered why - the caps i read 2 different values 220 and 22 i am using 220... is this wrong?

What OS do you use?
Does your config /OS replace some kickstart libs and force a reboot because of this? Then a reboot after power-up would be normal.

What HD/CF do you use?

i use a sd to ide adapter and a 32gb sdcard with apollo os, then i tried coffin and this does it too... its not a problem as it works

I haven't heard about 220uF caps.
The caps of C3 and C6 should 2 (for each) 22uF.

is it damaging my vampire?

On top of the VAMP are two CAPS.
They are SMD parts of size "0805" (~ halve size of a rise corn)

You can improve the stability of some VAMPs by adding a 2nd helper CAP on top.
If you solder another SMD cap of size "0805" on top, then
picking one or two 10uf or 22uf - would be a good choice.

If you have no SMD caps then you can also use an electrolyte CAP,
here it would be of advantage to use a low resistance one.
For electrolyte CAP people usually use a low resistance mid size CAP of 40-400 uf. The exact size does not really matter.

To sort it out: are there occasionally only cards produced by kipper2k affected with this issue or are some cards produced by Majsta affected as well?

I have a card made by Majsta so id like to know the answer to this question too.

Also. Will this be the case for Gold 3?  Which is what im mostly interested in?

Do i need 2.7 to get to gold 3 or can i go from 2.5 if 2.7 is a problem?

Thanks

Can't answer you on the Majsta question, but you can reflash any core you want over each other, you could go back to an ancient silver core if you like, then flash 2.7 or 2.5... etc

I would change the question:

Does your card run x11 cores stable  Y/N ?
If not then it makes sense to investigate the root cause,
bad CAP, bad connection to AMIGA, bad CAP on AMIGA mainboard,
old PSU or not matching PC PSU.

Next it would make sense to fix this rootcause.
