Hyperion have just made it available again so I wondered how well it runs on the Vampire boards.

The demo version from 2001 is available from Aminet.

this is warpup software. essentially it is ppc software that boots from 68k and iteracts with i/o avaliable via 68k. useles on vampire.

i think freespace engine is open in the meantime. however a proper 3d implementation is necessary for such games. good starting point is storm mesa on which improvements we worked with alain and bernd few years ago, tinygl being workeed on by someone here, albeit only software so far and aros mesa7, which works on 68k in software, but is too heavy for any practical application without hardware acceleration. it might even be too heavy with it.

There is a 68k version included so it should run on the Vampire but I don't know how acceptable it would be with software rendering.

The Engine for Freespace 2 is open source but I don't think Freespace is.

you could test this with wazp3d in uae or software rendering first, before expecting it to run on vampire. it gives me software error no matter what.

edit.

Is that with 3.x or AROS?  I don't have a 3.x setup on UAE or anything at the moment but for what its worth, I did successfully run it on Amithlon back when it was first released.

i tried both with aos and aros. software renderer and wazp. result similar. it dosnt start through, couldnt detetmne why.

are there particular demands? wait. i think screen must be 16bit.. long tlme..

okay, it wont work with wazp. choose software render. you might need to clear screenmodes. you need to set up ahi and have uae ahi deviece files in devs. you need more ram. max ip cpu ram to 128mb.
  save.

you need to choose the lowest resolution 640x480 otherwise the screen will be corrupted.

all the above is valid for both os3.9 and aros68k.
on aros there are issues with mouse click, which seems not to be noted very well. effectively came onty to briefing, not seen any action there yet.

There is a newer demo version on Aminet,
as well as updated installations on Hyperions private download area for registered owners. But its useless currently on Vampire - Warp3D is needed.

Game requires Warp3D compatibile GRAPHIC Card.
  A Warp3D driver for SAGA/Vampire RTG is a minimum.

I have the game, but my graphic card on x1000 has become supported just by now and game was not playable with warp3dz.

It could be Vampirezed (further optimized), but Hyperion holds rights to Amiga port.
Needs 060 (not FPU mentioned), Warp3D, GFX and 64MB. And CD or at least ISO and ISO mounter (man, that needs to become Vampire standard tool) >:-)

PPC processor, 68060, or AmigaOS 4.x
      Graphics-card
      3D accelerators supported through Warp3D
      Soundcards optionally supported through AHI
64 MB of RAM (min. 48 MB free)
      8x CD ROM

Its a bit of Wing Commander Style, but not that good.

However, there is also this, a ported PC executable ... for OS4.

Why not donating a vampire to Amigasoft
  EXTERNAL LINK  or Huno?
EXTERNAL LINK  I sense some OS4 to 68k RTG backporting >:-)

It's absolutely not needed.  I know because I ran it on Amithlon years ago when it first came out.

Probably best to ask them if they'd be interested in porting software for the Vampire and have the time before trying to start some sort of initiative.

the apollo team only donated hardware linked to certain bounties/tasks. I think they have some devices to lend but if Huno is interested in porting something to 68k is unknown to me. Most interested devs already own a vampire already.

I am playing freespace with no warp3d support. only software render. I have radeon 9200. it is playing on full details with 30 fps. warpos version.

on game:
Didnt look actually there was a software render.

On huno:
Surely, they need to acknowledge it first. Will ask Huno.

There arent many proven skilled developers, even in OS4 camp,
so contacting them by team and seeing can they fund system of their own would be nice - understanding that they might have classic.

WOS version cannot be run on Vampire plus speed is for what 100+Mhz 603/604 while its nice it can work with good flow in software rendering on PPC expanded Classic with 9200. SAGA/RTG Vampire mode has yet to prove speed vs discrete cards.

The original version of Freespace for PPC used a software renderer because there was no hardware acceleration for OS4 when it first came out.  A Vampire version should be possible with source code.

you dont even need frespace source code (it is open anyway, isnt it?) you simply need to write vampire warp3d driver based on wazp3d. im not sure how many teemes it needs to be repeated.

Descent Freespace is a PowerPC port by Hyperion.  I don't know of a 68k version and it has not been released as open source.  There is a remade engine for Freespace 2 but not from official sources.

Edit

I see that the Hyperion port included a 68060 executable.  I don't know if floating point is required for it.

;)
i didnt know either, except pointed to it explicitely and trying to get it work for uae. must be pretty broken altogether. the usual job. bszili and crew contributed to the late re-relase, but we wont ever see the sources for it, i fear, so thats what i was referring to. scroll top the thread.

Or ask for access to the access to the Warp3D DDK once the required 3D features are implemented in the Vampire core.
