Battle of Wesnoth

The Battle for Wesnoth is a Free, turn-based tactical strategy game with a high fantasy theme, featuring both single-player, and online/hotseat multiplayer combat. Fight a desperate battle to reclaim the throne of Wesnoth, or take hand in any number of other adventure.

The game runs 16bit color and in 800x600 or higher resolutions

The game was ported by Arti.

Please mind that this is a PC-game port originally targeted for 800MHz+ PC. The game runs on 68040/60 with enough fastmem but slow and becomes playable only with 68080 CPU.

Very cool to see games made playable by 68080 :)

I suspect Master of Orion 2 would be another classic game (if ported) like this..

I think that several thousand games have been added to what can be played on AMIGAS now!!!!

Of course, they aren't playable for the simple reason that the source code isn't available for recompiling and/or 3D routines can't be run because we don't have the GPUs to do it, but similar games COULD be made because the HW is CAPABLE now!!!! :-DDD

My experience with this on 6080 it is playable but slow only because it is targeted for 800 Mhz like you said. However, to truly show the power of what AMMX can do like it was shown on Riva....if we are to convert lots of codes into efficient AMMX code this will be a great example that Vampire while running at 68080 @ 75 Mhz or 100 Mhz depending on your version of vampire..it can match bar with PC 800 Mhz easy and you don't need powerful power supply or cooling fan or even asic as a matter of fact.

I have never played this game.

I will wait for the standalone motherboard Vampire to play it. :-DDD

Can you be more expressive?!? What exactly slow down the game?!? Graphic decode routine?!? Sound routine?!? AI Routine?!? Network?!? I asked you because some of them can be rewrite to AMMX and optimized... I can't rewrite this routines (I haven't Vampire and don't know MMX instructions - only integer and FPU assembler). But it is always good to know what can be done in this game...

im not sure it is always very apparent, what the bottlenecks are, even though it may be that profiling could be now easier with apollo core.

How sprites are rendered and handled is one way of optimizing it and increasing performance if anything at least anywhere between 10% to 15%. If that is done then that is sufficient to give performance equal to that of 800 Mhz and I am not joking here. I have the game but because of the slow down speed I am not anxious to play it, a lot

The executable is wesnoth.bin and it is placed in the main drawer.

I had some issue with wesnoth because the amiga filesystem.
The name of some files are too long, so the game refuses to start or crashes.

You should install it on a partion with SFS, PFS or fat95...

(or try to unpack it to ram: to check if the archive is complete)

Hm, current FFS does long filenames too, as far as I know.

I have SFS installed but do not find any wesnoth.bin.

I will download it again and check, if there is something broken

Do I need some form of an SDL library installed?

when attempting to run it, it just goes back to the amiga shell, when running it from the drawer it claims "Unable to open your tool 'Wesnoth'". I see the script setting the stack to 600000 and then attempting to launch the wesnoth.bin. But no activity afterward...

Edit: honestly I can't seem to get much of Arti's ports to work, so I think I have some environment or dependency issue with my WB 3.9.
