I'm writing to see if there would be interested parties to port Open Lara (Tomb Raider) to 68080+SAGA.

I'd like to know what might be the required bounty for someone to take this on, so that I can get to fundraising.

Really?!?!
No one is interested in getting paid to port a game to 080+SAGA?

It's even been successfully ported to the Gameboy Advance so it should run well on the Vampire.

Realistically most good coders work on something already. As you might know there are several big projects in progress.  The Lara Port looks also like another big and complex project which you can not easily do in parallel but that needs focus.

Therefore I find it absolutely not surprising that not many people answer. Does this make sense to you?

Artur already said he might be interested doing this.
And Artur has a long success history of porting games.

From my understanding the 3DO and a Gameboy Advanced version of the code that have a lot of speed improvements is using a bit of ARM assembly to do so, so it may be a bit of work converting assembly to get just as good of a port on Amiga.

However I suspect the regular port should actually perform fairly well on the 68080 with a bit of work...

Awesome.
Is there a DM function in this forum, I can't see it?

How would you like to proceed?

Thanks, Gunnar.
That makes sense. Thanks for the extra info.

Hi Richard,

Yes the Apollo-Team works on very many big projects.

I can quickly name you some examples:
  - ApolloOS improvemets in general
  - Amiga OS Network Stack improvements
  - V4 Network driver updates
  - RIVA video player updates
  - 3D tech-demos
  - developing Drivers /Libraries to use 3D functions (OpenGL)
  - improve OS Filesystem Caches
  - the works on 3 PC games which we ported to Amiga
  - in addition to this team has three new selfdeveloped Amiga games in the pipeline in various progress states.
  - we try to look into improving Amiga webbrowsers
  - I work on new content for Amiga home schooling to teach people how to develop demos for Amiga.

So yes we are working on many topics

Using SAGA 3D features will for sure help the game a lot.
Maybe this is not needed for this game and maybe Lara will run even fine without the 3D acceleration of SAGA.
But as SAGA has good 3D acceleration features, the coding for SAGA will give you like twice the FPS compared to making a generic AMIGA game with RTG.

If you want to help to bring this game to Amiga, then please ping me on Discord and we can brainstorm about next steps

It would be great for any port to target all V2 and V4 accelerators.

I understand this. I think this does depend a lot on the features of the game you want to port and can be decide case by case.

The V2 is a very strong card but the V4 is stronger and offer more features - like 16bit audio or 3D acceleration.

if possible there should be a more broad minimum requirement and possibly improved performance using hardware features when running on V4. But that should be talked to Arti before doing the bounty.

Open Lara

Open Lara is not anymore the old game which was once made for the 486 CPU. Open Lara is new written and has higher requirement but also offer a lot better looking features.
The game supports higher resolutions than the old original version and supports also much higher quality texture mapping.

If you aim for low end version of the game with low resutions
like 320pix game, low quality texture mapping and low frame reate than using RTG and a Zorro card is possible.

If you like to have better looking game with higher resolution like 640x480, better texture mapping and more colors then RTG and Zorro are not sensible options anymore as they would make the game unplayable slow.

If you want better quality than using direct SAGA features would be your option to get the game run.

All the current 3D games on Amiga have very low quality.
If you make a new one - should it again be a low quality one?
Would it not be nice to make once a good looking one?

Regarding making a bounty.
Question is:
- Will people donate for the best 3D game in highest quality ever on Amiga
- Or will they donate for the 100th 3D game in bad quality?

What do you think is more likely?

Personally, I'd have thought that a lower low res version akin to the PS1 would be more popular as if you go for a high end V4 version using 3d acceleration then you are reducing the market.

And I disagree about low res games being bad quality - we have had some cracking ports recently that run in 320x200 mode and they look great.  I for one would be amazed to see Tomb Raider on my V1200 Amiga and if works on 060 then even better!

The V2 vampires can just about play the DOS port via PC-Task, just no sound.

Less than two years ago I donated € 500 in your pockets to support and enjoy a V1200, being told "you want a nice thing buy the new card" is disrespectful to customers.

Ok, now you will exclaim "nobody forces you to buy again" but as I see it a serious development company creates a compatible software from the bottom up, automatically those who have a V1200 will know to play at 320x200, who a V4 at 640x480, in this way things should be managed, not cutting cleanly those who until yesterday supported ... boh ...

Not even in the PC mode, which has always been starved of resources, has there never been such a violent handover between one hardware and another, I mean, even in the days of OCS / ECS - AGA was played on the downside ...

I  would donate for high qualty im done with 320 x 240 3d games. We need to show the advantage of the vampire and apollos other wise whats the point spending £600 to play a game you could play on a original A500.
