AltiVec is the Freescale trademark for the PPC vector unit, yes.

This is such an elitist attitude,

For me Amiga was always "learning and understanding" how the Amiga works.
Understanding means for me knowing how the hardware works.
To opposite to this is "hiding information" with layers.
Hiding information = hiding learning = hiding knowledge.

I don't think that hiding knowledge is good at all.
I think that "hiding" is weakening the programmer
as as more you hide from the programmer as less you enable him.

You write this in a very generic way.
But I'm assuming you mean specifically game development on Amiga as what this thread is for.
From your view of a hardware person it makes it understandable.

As you all know MAC 68K, ATARI ST and AMIGA have the same CPU.
Only AMIGA had a very special chipset, with sprites, Copper, Playfields. By masterting the Amiga chipset - games could look on Amiga so much better than on ATARI or MAC.
But this not comes for free: The Amiga chipset is complex and needs be learned first.
Only when you fully understand it you can write a game making use of it.

PC did not had these features.
An Amiga you could write an game like LIONHEART with 7MHz CPU speed.
But only by knowing and mastering all tricks in the AMIGA chipset book. A PC did not have these tricks ... and therefore PC only where able to make similar games with 100 MHz CPU speed.
If you code a game on Amiga like a PC game - then it will underperform on Amiga.
