Here some first screenshot showing AROS
running on AMIGA 600 + Vampire + Apollo Core.

As we are new to AROS this is "work in progres"

nice!

is there any link to this AROS 68k version with workbook?

edit: i found workbook in the full (1.3GB) AROS pack. well, it is lightweight, and really limited :) but it is worth to develop, because dopus is ... slow & dumb

workbook is as well as wanderer in the system folder.you dont need to download 1.3gb. it is contained in nightly iso. as i said im putting some work into debugging scalos as an option, however we will see how far i get.

@gunnar: i actually expect apollo to be able to run wanderer

you can try to include setpatch at the beginning of the startup-sequence. aros is compiled for 68000, but if apollo identifies itself as 040, setpatch would patch in some optimized routines. for instance mattheys copymems. however i dont know how aros setpatch detects the cpu model. it works automatically.

also, you dont need to kick up from floppy. you can bootstrap aros directly from aros iso decompressed to a bootable partition on a hd, as it seems you already have made one. its very simple. all in my description on amigaforum.de i linked to in the other thread.

in short you need to add arosbbotstrap on the very beginning of your s-s on the boot partition:
  boot/amiga/AROSBootstrap ROM boot/amiga/aros.hunk.gz

the amiga will reboot into aros, first time it powered on. you need to turn it on to get to original kickstart again, since aros kick is reset fest.

in case of problems aros produces debug output including boot log on serial, baudrate 115200.

i think given fair amount of ram on vampire and availability of rtg it isnt neccessary to use workbook as desktop. i could make an image or archive of my working setup inclusive scalos as desktop. if someone mailed me the vampire p96 drivers i could include them and enable the rtg modes. or i can instruct you guys how to do that.

i mean, of course when booting from a hd drive, cf card or something like that. this is of cource much more convenient that a floppy, if it works.

Thanks for this demonstration (Boot test from AROS floppy). As far I can say, I have many problems with AROS:

1. This is UGLY (Workbook)

2. The other distribution (AROS Vision RTG 3.0) is more terrible. Looks like Win95 on Ecstasy, sorry

3. AROS failed to reach its goal even after 20 years of development

Aros claimed, that their goal is, to replace OS 3.1
EXTERNAL LINK
I own AmigaOS 3.1. It has 6 discs. There can I download 6 Aros.adf to replace them?
Hopefully with 2k fixes, 64bit HDD fixes, newer filesytem...?
In the whole website I cannot find 68k download either. AROS does not support 68K very well, I think...

(edit: found this EXTERNAL LINK  https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Aros/Platforms/68k_support)
Very much English and text, but that isnt the point. But this is (in my eyes) very much useless information. I need download button !! An AROS 3.1 distribution on disks, an install button. thx :) Otherwise I still will use OS 3.1, okay ?

The AROS project has been started in 1995. After 20 years there are still no 6 disks to replace original OS3.1.  So in my eyes they dont have reached their goal.

If I missed something, then I apologize and let me know.

They promised a standard car, which can travel on streets using normal fuel and fits all people, single and families. Then instead they built a F1 Car only for formula one circuits. But noone want it and noone can use it. I need the car for normal streets (Amiga) and the F1 people say: They are doing a F1 car? There is the promised standard car? Let´s see the standard car, test it, and then we will see further. But you really want to develop AROS for PC people?

I have created the "Win95 on Ecstasy"

  thanx for the flowers

besides your polemic... Aros was created for X86, 68k is the latest branch. There was never any support by most 68k users like you, people only saying "as long as it not offers 100% of 3.X and is even faster and includes all patches we will not use it". Then being asked to contribute (and be it by simple testing) people suddenly became quiet. Aros Vision RTG was never orientated on 3.1., in fact I orientated at big boys like Amikit and used Magellan for it (the same f.e. Amikit does). So one small comment why not directly offer to help Wawa, he is working on a version for real hardware based on Scalos. That would be a more constructive approach... BTW others like the "Win 95 on Ecstacy". You will never make everyone happy...

@johannes

first off what you see is workbook, the floppy based desktop replacement, it isnt anything much different than a usual workbench boot disk. usually that disk was even less functional.

unfortunatelly aros doesnt come on floppies today. but would you really want that? arent other media more reliable? basic aros system is about 20mb. it may be about 4 times bigger than 3.1 in its time, but still less than any other alternative in amiga land. these 20mb include numerous features 3.1 did not have. rtg support, networking and usb stack (usb not yet functionable on 68k), improved filesystems, snoopdos replacement including serial logging, basic but ergonomic editor instead of memacs, possibility to move windows offscreen, ahi with a number if drivers, 3d subsystem (not entirely supported on 68k, especially not on planarr screens), a sort of boing bar etc. etc. sure, the icons and skins may not be beautiful, but these elements may be replaced.

what i agree on, there should be a basic ready to go distribution that works with (almost) every amiga machine available via a simple easy to find download button.
i hope we will have that soon.

If i had the time (maybe i will find it) I would make a clean version with NO png icons and runnig Dopus as a desktop replacement.

Maybe add some small must have third party but no to many.

Make it look as much as a clean OS3.1 with Dopus as possible.

THAT would be a start.

i have tested dopus magellan as well. it can be run in paralell, but scalos is overall faster and more worbench like, getting dopus into the state that resembles workbench with its functionality well is quite a piece of work.

instead if you want to run scalos you simply need to merge contributions into your aros partition and run it. one thing i dont know how to do it is to get rid of the primary workbench screen that is left in the background and eats up chip ram.

it would be good to have some repo somewhere where we can replace element for element, just like subversion but binary oriented and preserving amiga file attributes. olaf has an ftp, but uploading and downloading whole partition images may not be the best idea. nevertheless im going to put an archive there later today.

I think of making a additional version (or two versions) based on either Wanderer or Scalos. It is impossible to satisfy every interest or preference with one version. Besides it saves me lots of time (f.e. for testing)

"RTG" is the testing field for me and also the development platform

then the reduced commercial version and a slightly extended download version

best thing is to include each option, which isnt exactly a problem, since all are open. i have been running magellan, wanderer and scalos side by side on my a4000 here and all is fine except the said chipmem limit when not using the rtg.

huge chipmem usage is the actual main disadvantage with scalos, which i have found been mentioned on scalos faq page. it occures, that its usually been solved with fblit, which is unfortunate as fblit apparenly wont work on aros (i have not tried). there must be some other way to be found, to put the whole icon imagery in fastram instead chip.

just an idea, i dont know if possible. online repos like git, sf or svn are actually made to host code, but can be used to host binaries, even if this isnt the main task. is there a possibility to host amiga files along with the attributes in any such repository?

if so then it would be the best way to put together an aros distribution for amigas including vampire extended ones online. it would be most convenient if it could be accessed from under aros/amiga to commit single files.

im saying this, because im just compressing a whole partition for an upload, and i find it is impracticable thing to do for a reasonable workflow.

edit:
actually it may be that access from under amiga isnt that necessary, as well as the support for attributes. we just need to check if i can upload an fs-uae directory drive to some repository from under linux.

@ Olaf  - Thanks for your explanation. And sorry for my hard words, dont take them personal. Please take my hand for excuse.

I locked up my Amiga in 1999 until last year so I missed this time. I didn´t knew that AROS is at first an X86 Port. So you spent a lot time and work to offer with Aros Vision something similar as Windows, and so it looks.
As I wrote that above, I was frustrated because after one hour of research, I didn´t found a small 68K distribution for download. Just to test from floppy, or to make a test installation on my A1200. Because I want to know more about AROS. How much is the state of the project? 50%, 80%? What is done, what is missing (to 3.1)? I couldn´t find answers. I was on EXTERNAL LINK - no 68K (found) and at EXTERNAL LINK - telling me that I need WinUAE. So I was confused. I thought AROS is a standalone operating system.

So I came to the conclusion, that after all this years of hard work, there is still no version that replaces OS3.1 on my Amiga

@johannes:

first of all most thanks ahould be going to jason mcmullan and toni wilen, who actually ported aros back to amiga, after years none has been able to achieve even a small step in this direction. i have been doing a lot of pretty dumb testin g for them but its olaf that actually put together a distribution, that doenst simply contain of aros but also of a number of consiederable amiga sotware he has achieved allowance for.

i understand your feeling against olafs distribution, as olaf being uae user himself geared it towards what he is accustomed to. alas im much less engaged than he is, otherwise we would have some more simplistic solution by now. i hope ill be able to provide some basics for it soon, but we should discuss infrastructure allowing others to contribute.

for instance an iff/ilbm icon theme based on permissive licensing would be great to have. i have made some basic conceptual steps towards one that would work well on interlace screens but got bored after four def icons. this however is a subject for a separate thread.

@ Wawa T

thanks for you explanations. In the meanwhile i wrote my response to your post earlier:

There are other media then disk? My Amiga can only boot from disk. Is there another way? Okay, the harddisk. But it has to be prepared.

Let´s think what happened to me: Last year I rediscovered the Amiga.
So I bought an A1200 without peripheral at Ebay. (I had a mouse, a power supply and OS 3.1 disks in my old stock). Then I got an 16GB CF-card and an IDE-CF adapter. Then the work began... How to partition the card (OS3.1 Install disk didn´t recognized the full 16GB), what filesystem shall I use...

Now the Amiga 1200 has an ACA1221 so I have additional 9MB Fast RAM.
What I like to do is to listen to some mods and play some games from harddisk using WHDLoad

So a bootdisk would be nice, offering to do partitions for bigger CF than 4GB and offering alternative filesystem. (I know that with KS3.1 I have to make partitions lower than 4GB)

In the next step it would be nice to install the AROS to the harddisk/CF. (instead of OS3.1)
    Network would be nice.
Installation of latest WHDLoad (maybe through internet access) would be nice.

Why make a 20MB+ distribution, when you can download and install the latest packages? PCMCIA network cards costs only 15€ at ebay.
To this machine I wouldn´t need RTG, AHI, 3D and please no boing bar. 1MB of my FAST RAM can be used after boot, but no more!
I want to use Amiga, because I want to behold the control. No installation or bootup what I don´t want or need. Otherwise I can use an Apple or Microsoft OS.

With Vampire of course I will need RTG and AHI, and maybe something more. But this is another story...

So Wawa, how can I help you, so that we get this AROS installation disk?
    Features:
    - booting from floppy, doing partition, starting network with PCMCIA card, select packages to install, drink a beer, reboot, enjoy!

excuse accepted :)

I was only a little unhappy about the tone and did not know that you are so to say a "newbie" here

I returned 2011 so most I myself only know from web and discussions... Aros was started in mid 90s already (I found a test in amiga magazine in 1997) and was the try to port Amiga OS to standard PCs (X86). It was portable so more targets were added later like X64, ARM, PPC, of course X86. Latest branch is Aros 68k (I think added 2010) but most developers that are still active are mainly interested in X86. PPC is more or less dead, ARM is slowly becoming active now. As Wawa explained it was the work of Jason and Toni, the ports were complished but of course not perfect due to missing feedback by the community. I myself become involved because of the natami project that not really became reality but Vampire/Apollo bases on some of the foundations of that time. I myself discovered Aros 68k and thought it could be a great chance in future because it runs both on amigas and emulation and is adaptable to future hardware. I also discovered that you can in many cases add components like libraries without any problems and even replace components like Zune with MUI 3.8. I liked Amikit so I wanted to create a comparable distribution that is comparable with it and even includes development tools like preconfigured compilers. I am of course aware that purists prefer a smaller and reduced distribution but due to the lack of interest to use it on real hardware I more concentrated on my big distribution.

regarding state and how much percentage is reached I do not know

For example I compared graphics library Aros vs. 3.5 vs. 4.X

  EXTERNAL LINK
how you see there are some routines of 3.5 not implementated but also new ones added. Aros includes many things you only could do by patching on 3.1.

So I think Aros is not Amiga OS 3.1 or 3.2, it is Aros, based on the old API but with many new features and highly compatible. On old Amigas I would say optimizing it for the hardware (f.e. using blitter) is more important than missing routines. Also from general experience not everything is needed and the missing routines are hopefully added when interest in Aros rises. Compatibility in general is high and you can easily add old binaries to add functionality.

olaf, its not enough to compare the availability of functions, the implemantation, compatibility speed of execution is also a factor..
