True. Also, as a bonus Classic users can transfer their drives.

SATA doesn't need drivers if you use an IDE->SATA convertor, the interface becomes fully IDE. Besides, I would still use a CF card or other IDE SSD since it's going to be fast enough for the Amiga, have minimal latency, and support all the PIO and DMA and UDMA modes (given FastIDE). It's also going to be small inside the Amiga (with the only smaller solution probably being MicroSD to IDE, but that will have added latency and complexity on the interface conversion, so I wouldn't recommend it...

I think jm20330 can be used for all vampires. It is only a small chip that converts ide to sata and not need any driver.

Why need to ide again?

All this stuff adds latency..

Its latency to pcbs max 3 days for entegration driving.
And in the future there will stay no ide and we will start to use our sata disks with ide2sata converters again.

Presumably at that point we have SATA drivers in the OS, and a direct SATA interface

Presumably at this point when you have sata driver and sata interface on your amiga , everybody on pc will use other new xata driver and its new different interface

SD cards you can buy on every street corner in super-low price. When Amiga software library will grown in insine speed, then team probably create Vampire V6 or V8 with SATA controller. For now SD card is best solution. And CF cards, of course.

I have a 250GB hard drive in my Amiga ^^

Of course many ppl have big HDs in their Amigas, but those drives are not necesary in any way. There is no Amiga software whitch can use it :) You can add all systems, all programs, all games and probably all demos and 250GB wil still be too much. And no one have all this stuff in Amiga hard drive. We're not using all this stuff.
Of course SATA interface is best if some one want to use new hard drive in Amiga, but IDE gives us possibility to use CF cards, uSD slot let us connect CD cards. For now it's anough. Mayby next generation of Vampire will contain SATA slot, but first We must use existing HW. Vampire is already designed and no one will change it for one not so important interface.

Thats true, but there is also data that needs storage... pictures, animations, music, video, whatever...

Now with the new power of the vampire, users will start to produce more high resolution images, animations, videos or audio. This needs more space.

If community prove that it's realy needed, then Team probably find solution. It's start of Vampire project. V4 is, in my opinion, first "mature" release. V500 and V600 was just start. Now, when ppl start programming, writing, creating and all Amiga stuff will grown, next Vampire release probably will contain SATA. For now it's not so important.

I was thinking the same but considering that now a vampire equipped Amiga can play mp3 files and show full movies etc, it could be cool to have all of that available on the internal hard drive.

I tried a ide to sata adapter and a 500 gb notebook drive, and worked fine on the vampire.

And speed. Why add so many features, but a slow hd interface wich sloowwww them?

This conversation reminds me of: EXTERNAL LINK

The V4 introduces two new interfaces: USB and Ethernet. I am sure there is a lot of work both for the hardware and software support. To me these are the correct priority. The IDE interface has a lot more unlocked potential such as DMA support.

Maybe on the V5 we could see SATA? A "nice to have" feature for sure. :)

Greg, is absolutely spot on here.
The IDE delivers with PIO 12 MB/sec - with slightly better driver it could be over 16 MB/sec and with using DMA over 20 MB/sec.

Compare this to the speed AMIGA Zorro2 memory fastmem expansions == 3.5 MB/sec.

Amiga has been able to play mp3s for a very long time. In 1999 when I started writing on my first novel, I was listening to mp3 and typing in kindwords at the same time on my 040. It worked perfectly. I had a 4GB partition for just single mp3s and another 4GB partition for mp3 albums. Both were kinda full xD

If I had known back then how to use pfs3 I would have had only 2 partitions on my then 13GB hard drive

  Funny ^^
Nah, I was just wondering why, and wondering if the team had looked into it. Just a thought.
Also, yeah IDE has alot of potential in speed that no Amiga hardware that I have ever seen, takes advantage of. Granted that the cpu needs to be fast enough and that the RAM needs to keep up with those speeds. Vampire might be strong enough for all I know

Oh yeah, definately. IDE is fast enough alright. But Hds in IDE format are getting harder and harder to come by. There is the IDE to SATA adapter, though. I just don’t know how well they work and how compatible they are.

Also, another thing I’ve been thinking of alot. Big games. Why make a huge game that takes up gigabytes for world content, items, textures, music and so on, if only a handful of people have hard drives big enough to install them? Run the game from DVD roms? Doable, absolutely, but.... bahh :)

Am I right?

Yes, I know, I know.. the vampire is still a baby that needs alot of love and nurture, and it’s already awesome! The plans for the V4 are allready awesome. It needs its time, but we must never stop thinking ahead

Yes they work, and cost like $5.
Yes you can attach Terabytes of HDD to the VAMP this way.
