You only need to licence if there are patents still in place or you need access to documentation or to use a trademark.

That's why the Vampire boards don't have DIGITAL-VIDEO™, they have digital video output (using a common connector for easy connection to modern displays).

Its not only the trademark and the name, DTS here would really need to be implemented in hardware or software.DTS is extended 5.1, while again Paula/Pamela is "extended 2.0", which is perfect for Hi-Fi`s (now too bad standalone hasnt the RCA, I would plug it to Sony amplifier and big wooden 90s boxes with best sound, where any 5.1+ is a downgrade). Who wants a nice bass can extend the system with woofer and get "quasi 2.1" sound at best.

From a PeeCee sound point, its similar to "Wavetable multichannel synthesis" and we are up to the quality of GUS sound cards and almost Sound Blaster AWE32 vs Sound Blaster 1.0 8-bit sound. Its a big quality jump.

with MA Sci in audio production, specialised in surround sound design with complete mixing and mastering skills i can say something about DD and DTS.

DTS is NOT extended 5.1.  5.1 is 5.1.    FL, FR, C, RL, RR.
The main difference is in data reduction and channel encoding technique.

DTS is discrete multichannel surround format that has higher bit rate for audio material
Dolby digital is matrix based multichannel surround format that is quite opposite to DTS

newer, refreshed surround formats like DTS X and Dolby Atmos are upgraded in channel
number as well as bit rate.

as from the acoustical side, full range speaker is always better than 2.1 but decent
standalone and full range speaker costs a "bit" more than middle range consumer grade one.

Thank you. Well, from end-user side, old school Hi-Fi stereo with good "amplifier", separate components and wooden speakers produces way better sound then "modern plastic toys" be it 5.1 or 7.1.

So looking forward to best stereo sound so far coming with Pamela,
as well as Amiga finally going 16-bit plus in sound.

Amazing! Is the sound gona to be available through the standard Amiga audio ouput jacks?

Audio comes via DIGITAL-VIDEO. For the analog audio you will need DIGITAL-VIDEO Audio Splitter. Something like this: EXTERNAL LINK

Yup, this is why I proposed RCA connectors on the vampire PCB itself. If not actual RCA connectors, the at least solder points so that one can make their own extension with cable and RCA connectors on the other end for manual mounting, if you get what I mean.

BUT!! Awesome news none the less! ;)

Also, question... would 4 or 8 extra channels be hard to add, as in "taking up alot of FPGA space", or even in programming of the "chip" itself?

I notice the description says "Specifications:
1.DIGITAL-VIDEO resolution: 1080P/1080i/720p/576p/576i/480p/480i" but what about the esoteric Amiga modes we can push through the DIGITAL-VIDEO?

Those are included in 576i/p and 480i/p

The "esoteric" Amiga modes are 576p (PAL) and 480p (NTSC) which are listed above.

Lol, I should have finnished reading at least this page before replying to that one myself xD Doh!!

Many displays should provide an audio out option to connect to some amplifier. Or you might use an A/V receiver with DIGITAL-VIDEO in the first place.
So there are many different options.

Though, taking an output from a tv or monitor, one should make sure they take the sound from the right type of output. Putting an amplified sound into another amplifier is not always a good idea, it might sound crappy. In worst case it might break one part or the other.

Some outputs are pre amped a little bit, though. And in those cases, you're good to go, but you need to do some research on it if you don't already know what you're doing
