Screenshot showing the NG-AMIGA OS AROS, booting on A500+Vampire.

This screen show normal Amiga video out.
Optimized drivers for SAGA are under development.

On 1084, no less. That one was my first window into the world of Amiga. Stylish.

very nice.
keep up the good work !

on a side note: i found it too bad aros people have chosen that icon set.
they are not looking as good as plain os3.1 default icons, or magicwb, or even newicons/glowicons etc.. at least they should use a smaller size, they take too much screen space.
but fortunately, it's very easy for anyone to change them and use better looking ones.

apollo core have great potential, so does aros. the two of them could become a good solution for the future.

Initial reaction; very cool! :)

With Apollo Team pushing in AROS direction, the usage of said OS will probably increase quite a bit.

How is the install process of AROS?

With regards to incon change process/workbench customisation;

Can we use Ken icons like on WB 3.x or?
Does it utilize the icon library that greatly increases icon load performance, or doesnt it have the issues of classic WB to begin with.

Im sure Olaf and Wawa T will think; "oh comon Niding, you can answer those questions yourself by just installing that bloody thing (AROS)!!" :)

Anyhow, looking forward to using AROS.

@Mr Niding,

yes, unless i'm mistaken, i believe you can use any amiga icons with aros, even magicwb, newicons, glowicons and default 3.x ones. the method to change iconset is the same as in amigaos itself. (def_icons in envarc:)

aros would look so much nicer without window borders theme (just use default amiga theme),
and using magicwb iconset, and running directory_opus5.x.

i'll be waiting for a video that showcase aros general speed and responsiveness when running on vampire+apollo core.

Is that booting using an AROS rom or the kickstart included with the Vampire 500v2+?

With Amiga OS 3.x stuck in development limbo I would really love to see AROS 68k catching up on performance and compatibility with built in support for Vampire/Apollo hardware.

you can use almost any icon by using icon library of PeterK and with a trick (patch that changes colour palette) even MagicWB

Aros works with Aros rom replacements

During boot they install themselves in RAM. Theoretical you could install them replacing the 3.1 kickstarts but then 3.1 would no longer work. By installing them during boot you can use both. That is why Aros works on old amigas.

Great news of course :-)

you have the rather limited wanderer workbench

then you can use scalos (based on Zune) and Magellan

Magellan is most flexible solution because not depending on MUI or Zune so you can for example install MUI 3.8 and Magellan

BTW Aros offers many advantages, f.e. poseidon USB Stack, Network Stack, RTG, AHI (and much more) out of the box

Zune (MUI) but you can basically add any toolkit or even replace Zune with MUI 3.8 or MUI5

when using aros it ends all those discussions if this or that is legal

What about speed? I've red that AROS 68k is still pretty slow.
Is this meaning you are co-working in order to improve it's performance?

you mean me?

No I was not involved in development there

I created a distribution based on it but I use it on UAE

Regarding speed I think yes and no... It was tested on RTG and there it was very slow. One problem is internal Aros calculates 24bit so the less colours the slower in opposite to 3.1

Another bottleneck might be graphics driver because the driver in Aros 68k was a relative unoptimized driver using the RTG system used in UAE (P96) so with a better driver directly using the framebuffer in Vampire it could be faster too. And then of course Aros itself can certainly be optimized, do not forget that Aros was developed for and on X86 with lots of resources available.

Or just convert all MagicWB icons to OS3.5+ type ColourIcons.

Thank you, I can see there is a lot of room for improvement, that was what bothered me :)

Mindblowingly awesome! Everything the Apollo team touches is, it seems.

The future is looking bright.

Keep up the good work.

Ps. Would you mind sharing a video clip of NG-Amiga OS in action?

When AROS was booted on the Vampire for the first time, graphics were so slow that you could see each pixel appear one after the other even though the comparatively fast Vampire RTG was used. The current speed of AROS graphics operations on Amiga RGB is similar. Both effects seem to be caused by one and the same issue, the over-abstraction deep inside AROS where each pixel is an object and a line inherits from pixels and so on. If there is no cybergraphics driver with overrides for each graphics primitives, this ultra slow fallback solution gets used. The Vampire RTG driver currently only has stubs and does not offer any override functions and for this reason uses the Picasso96 CPU drawing functions on AmigaOS 3.1. The P96 drawing functions are quite okay and thus user experience in AmigaOS is generally good even without acceleration. A driver with accelerated functions is in the works. This driver would most probably also solve the central issue with graphics speed when running AROS on Vampire RTG. However, AROS would still use its abysmally slow built-in rendering functions for custom screens. Thus, I think apart from an accelerated Vampire RTG driver there is need for an accelerated driver for Amiga custom chip display modes. If this could be written, AROS may all of a sudden become quite usable even on classic accelerated 68k Amigas.

I'm sorry but WHAT!?! Holy hell who thought that was... even vaguely reasonable!?!

aros can use any icon set you want. you can replace them one by one or commit and let compile an icon set as a part of build process. aros is able to handle png icons, but also iff planar icons. same for skinning system. i have put together a four color iff skin and it works.

however loading smaller iffs is faster as bloated huge true color pngs, the imagery is internally converted to full color for what i know and handled as such. time and commitment will be necessary to see how to imoprove it.

btw i see this aros screen every day. for starters i would delete theme.var in env/sys or disable themeing in appearance prefs. it will give you faster graphics and more amiga look alike desktop, which defaults to 3.1 style. especially aplha transparent menus are simply unusable on planar screens.

for those interested, one should be able to run aros alson on genuine amiga, i have a small problem here with my a1200 atm, seems some mmu issue, but normally it works. if you have a zoorro rtg card you, can enable aros amiga rtg support using p96 drivers. you simpla need to append the .card and .chip files along with the paths where they are stored to arosbootstrap command, which is softkicking aros from amiga kickstart.
