Picasso 96 Sold to IComp & Hyperionpage  1 2

Hi guys,

according to the Picasso96 owners, they sold their IP to iComp and Hyperion as some kind of joint ownership:

Will this have an effect on the Vampire cards? There were lots of discussions regarding the P96 license and if it was legal or not to use it for the Vampire.

What are your thoughts?

First, I don't think it affects the old releases found on Aminet.

Second, it remains to be seen what will happen in the future obviously, but the two iComp and Hyperion are the reasonable owners of such IP so there is a chance we will see new development.
Maybe it will only lead to a "licence fee" in the same way Vampire needs to have a ROM file licence.

Jens has plans for a new version of Indivision with a built in chunky mode for the upcoming Amiga Reloaded (specs changed fairly recently).
So I guess he needs control over P96 to make it happen.

It does. The license was always about the rights to develop drivers for P96, never about end users. It's access to the driver developer kit (includes etc) that requires license agreement, reverse engineering has been considered hostile.

No effect.

The Vampire cards use 100% legal driver which can be continued to be used.
Also future improvements of this driver and like for example Speed tunings and or usage of AMMX are not affected by this.

We look forward to see that P96 as package after so many years of no development might be developed again.

well, if people wont be able to download p96 system itself to use the drivers it might matter. but lets see what comes out of this.

this is offtopic here. however sponsoring the bounties is not the most effective. the better option is development contributions. in fact someone who intended to write an aros apollo hidd has asked around for build instructions and even joined the list, but i dont have any futher info.

Maybe this was not advertised so much.
But Vampire development cards were shipped to AROS devs.

That's a WIN for the Amiga community! To have P96 available to use freely will inspire development. Good deal. It's also good to hear about AROS having developer boards. We can look forward to new software.

i think gunnar is reffering to jason (who is not active and to my knowledge sent the board back after completing the driver task he was commisioned with) and the person in charge of rtg apollo hidd (i have no further info on that). i dont know anyone else, who would fit int the category to my knowledge, but maybe they keep silent.

I think the motivation to revive AMIGA does unite us.

That's very true! The Apollo Team is providing much needed hardware and in the process is reviving not just the Amiga hardware but the Amiga spirit as well. That creates a positive atmosphere where great things are possible. Sharing P96 is a good thing for the Amiga community. Sharing with AROS is also good. These are all steps in a positive direction! Thank you for your efforts.

I wonder if that also means this Indie thing I bought for my A1200 will get Picasso96 modes? Of course, I could wait and buy a Vampire 1200 V2 when available and throw this Indie thing in the trash! (that might be the better option since Vampire already has P96). ;-)

indivision aga? yes i guess mk2 will. but if this will work together with vampire is another question. it seems indy and vamppire der providing registers  at the same addresses, which leads to those on indy be inaccessible while vamp is installed. so this functionality is probably broken with indy since it overlaps with vampire one.

Will Picasso 96 really be very relevant after S-AGA becomes available, anyway?

Which programs are unable to work on AGA and therefore not on S-AGA screens either?

Picasso 96 is used for screenmodes such as on the Vampire accelerators and to some extent in WinUAE and other video software, but unfortunately not the Indivision AGA Mk2, yet. But that will be irrelevant when the V1200 is released in the near future.

Unless there is another method for screenmodes on the Vampire cards it will certainly be relevant. But if P96 sources are available to be modified maybe the Apollo Team can make further enhancements to the P96 on the accelerator cards? Not sure about that.
