CoffinOS is free

I saw, indeed, CoffinOS distribution and it was installed on my V4SA without any further requirements.

This obviously implies that AmigaOS 3.9 and AmigaOS 3.1 are free, too.

Would you please send me a couple of copies then?  I will PM you my mailing address.

  What's cheap then?  X1000??

  Certainly not x1000 :)

AmiKit was always a paid thing, only older v8 was released as free.
Those who want free have AmiKit Real and something call "AmiKit Vampirizer" and can run that.

AmiKit was and is most feature complete AmigaOS package for last 15 years. Kind of "Amiga Linux package" so Jan does all the hard work, with few beta testers involved (kudos to Jakub here!)

See the list for yourself

AmiKit XE is really nice polished product, worth of its money.
I suppose some things like Updater had to be re-done for Vampire ("now Dracula the System Master" :) , so its not just the same thing as PC release.

What intrigues me most is "080 & 040 Executables" :)
I understand 040 executables of all software is included for compatibility. Erm, what 080 executables are included :))))

  Quick Guide is here
  EXTERNAL LINK

Kudos Jan, will get one, fully deserved price!

And this is how Jan explains it:

"I spent an unbelievable amount of time and effort putting everything together, an enormous amount of work that included the following:

A complete system re-design, including custom programs, enhanced functionality and overall integration
Every included program has been pre-installed, pre-configured and integrated, and most include optimizations that go far beyond the default installation settings
Extensive, fine-tuned UI enhancements, comprehensive testing and debugging specific to the Vampire version
International travel to procure one of the first V4 units

All of this requires time, time that I must balance with the needs of my family & day job. I worked on the Vampire port itself almost daily for almost a year. The fact is, paying for AmiKit XE Vampire ensures that I can continue providing user support, and also facilitates ongoing development, the hallmarks of a dependable & superior product!

All this said, I also provide FREE EDITIONS of AmiKit 8 for Windows, AmiKit 9 for Mac and even a Bootable edition if you prefer. They represent 12 years of intensive development and they are all fully functional and free forever. Enjoy!"

When I say it's theft, it's both ways. Do you think the rights holders are getting something on AMIKIT ?? I ask to see. Just like on pimiga and other distributions in which a lot of laws are bypassed.
So the guy makes a little distro with unpaid software, and he charges for it !!! That's what I'm saying, it's doubly theft !!!

Stop spreading baseless nonsense.

Many of the commercial apps included such as iBrowse and Roadshow are demo versions which are freely available to download. Others such as MUI and Another World, permission has been obtained from the license holders to include in the Amikit distribution. Apps like DOPUS 5 have a paid for license included.

I'm pretty sure Ján has done his homework first before doing something silly that could potentially destroy his product.

ALSO: Welcome to the forum Ján. It's nice to see you here mate and awesome work on Amikit.

  Dear Pascal,

You are COMPLETELY wrong here. You are mixing "apples and oranges" (here we would say grandmas n frogs :))))

  a) There ARE distros build piece by piece, where even for free packages licenses for inclusion are obtained, even special versions sometimes. AmiKit is oldest in such school, AROS Vision is other one we can remember. As an example, Jan has gone through great lengths to recently expand games included in AmiKit XE and once Diablo 68k port was done, he included download of SHAREWARE Diablo. His distro needs user provided KS and WB and does not include one shred of cracked, non licensed software.

Take a look at feature page, its explicitly stated permisions are granted even for MUI.
  EXTERNAL LINK
  b) Yes, some "images of hard drives" like pimiga included Final Writter, Perfect Paint and some other Amiga software that could, should be paid, but its IP holders did not react. My word of advice is - tell it to IP holders (Haage and Partner, AEON ...) in PiAmiga case, and if they react, their software might get removed.

Eh, what is theft is a strange question in capitalism :)

But in this case you are VERY wrong. Especially calling it "little distro". It would take days and nights to build OS 3.9 to that level, OS 3.1 even more.

That in total this represents around € 550 so when you buy a version of amikit the rights holders of software like Hollywood are paid up to 168 €, ditto for the other beneficiaries?

There are none of this software on AmikitX
A part from registered MUI and demo version of Ibrowse and roadshow
But yes MUI is still on sale for 25 euros and is included (with author's permission) in AmikitX

@Pascal

Did you really think that all those programs I mentioned are included with AmiKit? Funny. Obviously, you have no idea what's included, but you know it's a theft. OK. For your information, the software in AmiKit is included with permission.

@Sean, Stefano, Vojin, thank you guys!

Jan,

AmigaKit is a great distribution. I'm happy to hear you went through the process of obtaining permission before including content. Not many would go through that process.

Coffin did not certainly, as well as this Piamiga and many net archives. But IP holders does not seem to rage about it either (in Coffin case, MUI Mapparium and Fusion were removed).

Surely, with AmiKit and AROS based ApolloOS, its more thing of the past then of the future. Now, IP holders, resolve your matters!

Just made a short video about AmikitXE for Vampire. I think Jan deserves some congrats for building a very solid (and visually stunning) distribution for Vampires.

Its nice that its out, but I agree .. 50 Euro is way too much, 10-20 Euro would be the top price for me, it looks nice but a lot of demo versions included is just annoying..

I rather just use Coffin and buy Ibrowse then for such money ..

Everyone can decide what to do.

I think the author of AmiKit put a lot of time into it which might not necessarily be so obvious. So I think the price is warranted. It's not a community project like CoffinOS. It's done by one person.

I call 50 EUR for a browser that can't do HTML 5, CSS and JavaScript properly a lot. And yet, it might be warranted as well considering the effort put into it.
