Depends on their contract. They are either already paid or have some %. But yes, its likely this might be the Hypes best seller so far. Will it drive a bit of further OS3 and OS4 development remains to be seen.

On memory level you are right. But chip/slow fastRAM was never a champion.
There is a serious degradation, especially if anything "a bit advanced" is touched. This is not anything new, even A500, A600 and A1200 had significant performance boosts when added any fast RAM. Since performance is crippled to what 00 can do, I have no other descriptor but to fall to fastest performing and widely used CPU of 8-bit era (maybe Sinclair QL performance sounds better with 68008 and crippled memory bus even further?). Its quite explained in OS 3.1.4 FAQ and is of no surprise - one should not go to Amigas most extreme limits unless absolutely with no other option.

That is why realistic statement of requirements does include fast RAM.

If the say so, then it is so. Sad, if so. Anyway, I am boycotting Hype as long as they boycott x1000 CFE/net/Linux fixes and OS 4.2/Libre/TW development.

In the end, it would be better to have a bounty page for OS 3.x developments and free and open source end results, whereby authors have (c) over AmigaOS components, and that seems to be increasing since OS 3.5 days (e.g. MUI, AHI ...)

Update: A tool that can update OS 3.x with OS 3.1.4 has been uploaded to Aminet EXTERNAL LINK
Usage:

Back up your harddisk first. No complaints if something wrong happens!

The entire package should be unarchived as it is, in the
AmigaOS 3.1/3.5/3.9 system you are going to update.

Just boot from your AmigaOS 3.1/3.5/3.9 system and double click on the
Update drawer, and then double click on the Updateto314 icon.

Be ready to have your 3.1.4 floppies at hand to insert them when the
program asks you to.

Update I see claims they worked for free.

Has anybody attempted to roll their own (A1200) 3.1.4 ROM before flashing so that it includes the new intuition.library?

Seems a shame to have to reboot to get that loaded.

The latest remus beta I could find didn't seem to support it.

Not a week old child and already hacks and tricks :-)

Hopefully, some next Remus might be able to integrate some larger soft kickable ROM and will be able to pull it.

Would love to see some OS3.9+BB1-4 patches and CD32 style CD support in ROM. Sure some more wishes too, including these OS 4.1.3 libs, and I do hope MapROM supports 1MB+ Amiga format kick files :-)

Ultimately, most critical OS components (incl. parts of AHI/MUI) would be stored in super fast ROM / NVRAM adding to snappiness and boot time.

I have one question to ask. What is exactly the benefit of using AmigaOS 3.1.4? The only benefit I see is having hyperion have it's claws in law suit or money...I do not see any other benefit the OS 3.1.4 will give.

Am I missing something?

From OS 3.1 POV: 4GB HDD support and quite bunch of fixes, continuious fixes to fixes

From OS 3.9 POV: Fewer updates, but its nice to have anything updated.

Updated ROM after ages, but sadly with a need for few libs on disk

Perspective OS 3.x.x could be developed further, who knows maybe that Hype can stabilize and do some more OS4 and even OS3 backports development (e.g. AmiStore or Enhancer backport)

Not anything you cant live without.

  FAQ answers a lot
  EXTERNAL LINK
  Official feat list

Over 20 Kickstart ROM modules and many more disk-based core OS components were fixed, updated, or added.
Native support for all Motorola 68000-68060 CPUs, and a more robust Auto-Configuration process.
Support for large hard disks, including boot, for any OS 2.x/3.x-compliant controller driver supporting HD_SCSI_CMD, TD_64 and/or NSD. Dedicated boot partitions are a thing of the past, even on legacy devices. You can also use variably-sized "super floppies".
A modernized Workbench as powerful as the OS 3.9 version, including new or refreshed Preference editors in the legacy OS 3.1-"GadTools" style. Its tools such as DiskCopy and Format fully support large media. Printer, hard disk and many other support tools have been fixed and upgraded.
Remember "Diskdoctor"? It earned its PhD and is now ready to reliably rescue data from your floppies or hard disks.
The CLI/Shell and many of its commands have been reworked and modernized, now sporting native support for pipes, softlinks, hardlinks and long filenames. New commands support running Workbench programs from the Shell or upgrading ROM modules.
CrossDOS and the CD-ROM filesystem are now smarter, faster, and multi-threaded, adding Rockridge and Joliet extensions as well as UDF.
Fully reworked, modernized and bug-fixed printer drivers include support for PCL and PostScript, along with legacy NEC and Epson printers.
An optional upgradeable intuition.library provides off-screen dragging of windows for native and P96 RTG screens.
A colorful, professionally designed icon set is included, along with the traditional four-color icons.

First OS 3.1.4 tools start to appear:

Docs for extended OS 3.1.4 Handler Interf.
  EXTERNAL LINK
Releases 28K of ChipMem on OS 3.1.4
  EXTERNAL LINK
---- Joke and not so joke comments on some feat highlights -----
Note: Dedicated boot partitions are a thing of the past, even on legacy devices

Okay, Hype, when I can install OS 3.1.4 on x1000 to avoid ugly dedicated boot partitions? :-)

Note;Fully reworked, modernized and bug-fixed printer drivers include support for PCL and PostScript, along with legacy NEC and Epson printers.

It would be nice to see newer USB LJs working once for all. These drivers are updated to OS 3.1.x, are they newer/usable then OS 4.1FE ones?

My brand new LJ works with 3.1.4

Yes, they are newer. And they'll be "backported" to OS4 as soon as an OS4 developer picks them up.

ok, so the vampire you can flash up easy enough, but how do you software update a non-vampire actual hardware rom? I was about to buy this for all my machines - as I've learnt that if you want something in amiga land these days and it's there, buy it now as it won't be around forever.

ok so massive boot drive, but one of the advantages of having a separate workbench partition was that *WHEN* something went wrong and your machine crashed half way through a disk write that invalidated the entire partition, at least you could still boot and have half a chance of getting it back. Secondly, if my unpatched hardware rom doesn't support a >4gig boot volume, how do I boot of my boot drive to install the patch to boot off my boot drive? and how much wood can a WoodChuck chuck?

i'm going to buy this anyway for all of my machines/types eventually, purely because; "yay amiga", and i'm asking this here as this seems to be able to most active amiga forum...

[edit]
just read "roms and floppys available soon"

BTW, is there any particular reason the Vampires don't use autoconfig but need some kind of patching the Kickstart ROM as the description indicates?

Just a dumb question, buy why does Hyperion recommend the A1200 version of the ROM for the Vampire?  I've got an Amiga 500, 2000, 4000D and 4000T and I'm looking at almost $150 in cost if I need to include a 1200 ROM, too.  Will the ROM for a 500/2000 work okay on the Vampire?  What are the drawbacks over using the 1200 ROM?

Who cares what hyperion recommend. If hyperion is reading this right now....please read this: I do not care what you recommend. If hyperion is reading this. You should have been just a software company that releases new software for Amiga 68k and MorphOS alike and there should have not been an AmigaOS 4.x to begin with.

Dont have a clue and understand the anger of one copy per Amiga, but that is how they treat it (and for ROMs is necessary).

  I see in OUR FAQ
"Suitable ROM images are the A1200, A500 or A600 releases. Other variants have not been tested by the team. "

AEON-AmigaKit-Hype alliance has more undone promises, then done.

That includes AmmiStore 68k, Enhancer 68k (seen pictures at Amiga.org), OctaMED, Alladin4D updates ... Hower its all "on a long stick". Going back in past, Worsm DC Enhanced and SiN, also Shogo and Heretic II should be OS 4.x fixed and 68k backported now :-)

To be honest, when seen OS 4.1 on BlizzPPC and SAM460, 68060 was not enough for OS 4.x. 68080 is, but their speed of porting is marvelous.

They could realise MOS software, but you should not know what Friends have said on MOS in past, when being Amiga Incs best friend.

Its a miracle MOS 3.xx appears on AmiWest and AEON has paid for MOS port. As well as Acube for SAM460. And its good for MOS camp too, there is just a need to update video drivers. MOS could faster support SAM460 and x5000 fully then OS 4.x ;-)

There is no doubt that between All the AmigaOS that is not 68k and made by Commodore and it is PPC ....MorphOS hold supreme and is a winner that no other AmigaOS can ever catch up. AND IT IS COMMERCIAL too and CLOSED source to add nail to the coffin heheh :D

I keep saying if it had half of the essential applications of Linux or Windows in it and have a little bit more modern browser...MorphOS could easily take over Linux as an alternative window over mac and Linux. I would believe if we can somehow grab hold to the tiniest pole of the top three OS..MorphOS could become the fourth major OS in the market. Who knows.

  Dreaming?

OOOOoooh yeeeeeeeeeeeeah! But I am hopin......I am...indeed. No one knows this..but if can push MorphOS to be in the top mainstream OS...MorphOS on it's own would save all AmigaOS in one shot and open LARGER NEWER APPLICATIONS AND GAMES to all Amiga platforms in ways you cannot even fathom.

Iím personally looking forward to when I can use 3.1.4 with GOLD3
Iím happy to support any efforts to keep Amiga alive and purchased 3.1.4 immediately as it brings a whole bunch of well needed improvements.
