AmigaOS 3.1 with fixes should still run smoothly as before on an 68020/AGA/2MB, as there are lots of classic Amiga users still around. Therefore the changes should be made conservatively, and indeed just bugfixes as a starter is a good idea.

Fixing much of the OS 3.1 flaws, and inclusion of free app pack like AmiKit 8 would be nice starter pack for emulation and Vampire purposes. I wonder why they havent exploited that before. Then again, it can be included in AmiKit and Amiga Forever, and happines is mutual. And surely much more cheap $30 licenses would come that way, and not OS 4.1, be it in emulation packs.

As long as the update natively supports creating, booting from and using >4BG drives, i'm happy.

Any behind the scenes drama or politics won't affect my ability to enjoy my Amiga.

You're absolutely correct.  Hyperion has been promising SMP and an office suite for about 10+ years now and OS4 hasn't seen any upgrades of any significance since it's inception in 2003.  They still don't have drivers for the onboard audio and NIC hardware on the X1000 or the X5000 which forces users to buy add-on cards to get sound and network access.  OS4 is like an operating system Frankenstein...held together with an ever increasing number of patches disguised as point releases and half-@assed fixes that never seem to work properly.  I was never able to get USB 2.0 to work in a stable fashion and forget about USB 3.  Nine years after USB 3 is released and still no USB 3 support either.  This is what you get when you allow a software company to be run by an attorney.

HYPERION is a GREAT company... They helped bring AMIGAS to an NG status!!!!!!

And this is EVEN BETTER STILL!!!!!

Buy this upgrade, and should they sell enough of them, then it is GUARANTEED that they make a SPECIAL EDITION with Apollo Core 68080 enhancements!!!!!!!!!!

This is a "MUST HAVE" alliance!!!!!!!!

No bloats here please.. the AmigaOS is a microkernel type solution, the kernel needs to be kept small and efficient, whatever it takes. It doesn't work like a Linux kernel anyway.

Hi A1200 coder,

I have to agree with you there, but I attribute AOS4.x's BLOAT mostly toward PPC RISC's failures AND not having a CUSTOM PROPRIETARY chipset, like the AMIGA has with OCS/ECS/AGA.

When AOS4.x loads up, it has tons of stuff that deals with modern day chips on the motherboard, increasing the size of the OS drastically.

The Vampire will still have (hoping that Hyperion continue in the Amiga tradition, tight coding) HUGE ADVANTAGE over modern day "SUPER COMPUTERS" and their SO-CALLED "advanced os's". HA HA HA HA!!!!!!

AOS (Hyperion) + VAMPIRE (AMIGA) F.T.W.!!!!!!!!

I hope you're being sarcastic and not being serious...having owned an NG Amiga I really tried to find something to like about OS4 on my NG Amiga but simply couldn't.  OS4 was/is slow and woefully lacking in software.  The lack of multi-user capabilities, lack of useful software and the lack of security made it impossible for me to use it or recommend it for anything more than a curiosity to folks in the IT industry and I'd never recommend an NG Amiga and OS4 to a casual home user period.  OS4 has rough feature parity with Windows 98 but at least Windows 98 has a large library of apps and games.

It's hard for me to even consider NG Amigas to be Amigas....they're more like severely crippled PPC Macs than any of the Amigas I once knew.  Hyperion severely bungled things with OS4 and lately it seems that bungling is all they're good at.  I got tired of waiting for Hyperion to deliver on all their unfulfilled promises (10 years and counting on some of them) and took my money elsewhere. I'll never purchase another product from them.

How much do you think is needed to get development for commercial reasons, it is simply unrealistic, even if Vampire/Apollo becomes a real success in amiga terms.

This could also be just the beginning

Trust me....it isn't.  Amigas are a retro-geek hobby.  Any talk of the Amiga rising from the ashes to take the world by storm is simply  delusional.

Surely, but there should be something in between.

Like few nice apps and old ones updated, game or two and OS updates. Something like you have

My x1000 is NOT like Mac! Mac can run decent Linux with 3D! *not to mention MacOS X

True, but nothing like that will be coming from Hyperion.  Hyperion is the antithesis of innovation and progress.  Hyperion is more than happy to keep an OS frozen in time (2003) on CPUs that perform like it's 2003 also.

Most of the patches and updates for OS3 that they're talking about now are already available on the net.  They just want to charge you a premium for the packaging.  Just think ApolloOS with Hyperion's trademark stamped all over it.

Thierry's post cracked me up. True story.
I think it's sad Hyperion doesn't open source AmigaOS. If they let the OS live on in the enthusiast community, it might actually have a future.

hes always been blatant hyperion and os4 fanboy. though, since he has been subsequently banned from all the sites he could praise it on endlessly, he apparently had to find an emotional substitute, which was natami and then vampire. good thing, its just talk without any consequences.

one needs to be cautious with companies like hyperion. cooperating with them on any subject, not just os3 may lead one to have ndas and stuff imposed on him, with the effect that he might not contribute to an open alternative nor even release his own stuff, coded upon the gained knowledge of the sources they claim.

there are notable exceptions from this assumptions, like salass00, who was still contributing stuff to aros alongside os4, but many seem to take the threat seriously. most prominently thor himself.

I agree 110%. What value is there in keeping it closed now.

Hi Steve Ferrell,

I am 100% serious to the last letter in what I wrote in those two posts. ZERO sarcasm on my part.

Amiga Inc. were a bunch of morons, BUT selling the rights of AOS to Hyperion and working with Alan Redhouse (Eyetech) were their ONLY redeeming qualities, happening completely by fluke, I might add!!!!

I can see that some here have the mentally demented instability of anti-Trumpers in their hatred of Hyperion too. I visualise them like this!

I seriously doubt that. (See video above.)
In fact, I would call you a liar if you solemnly stand by that statement.
Steve Ferrell wrote:

It was NOT (very) slow. That's a fake assessment by yourself. YOU simply hate Hyperion.
And the fact that it was/is lacking in software is NOT Hyperion's fault at all!!!!
Steve Ferrell wrote:
The lack of multi-user capabilities,

Pretty much, for the most part, Amiga users don't care about that. I NEVER (<--yes, 100% accurate) will.

Again, falling to "lack of software" which Hyperion Entertainment have NO control over.

As for security, while people want that, the cost of it is too high and leads to a debilitating framework when one of the core principles of AOS was a simple USER MANIPULABLE OS. For instance, the CURSED windos REGISTRY is one of many things that come about as a result of "security features" implementations!!!!!!

What was the DOWNFALL of their attempted re-entry into the mainstream computing scene was DISGUSTINGLY expensive hardware, and NOTHING ELSE but THAT!!!!!

Steve Ferrell wrote:

HA!!! PREPOSTEROUS! They're NOTHING LIKE MACS!!!!!!
Steve Ferrell wrote:

Rather then attempting to explain why it is that you don't like them (FAIL), it would be easier to say that you HATE them.... Don't know why, but you do.
Steve Ferrell wrote:

Yeah, that's okay too.

But, you should redirect your anger at the REAL culprits in this case.....

And, I'll tell you the story of what it is.....

The INCOMPETENT IDIOTS that are responsible for the disappearance of AMIGAS from mainstream computing are IBM and motorola/freescale.

IBM OWNED the microcomputer market, and then allowed clones to appear that took ALL of their sales away (so much for DIVERSITY, eh?). They were IDIOTS for NOT writing the OS for their microcomputer THEMSELVES that allowed for the creation of the monstrosity MICROPOOP that went on to create a TRAVESTY they refer to as an "OPERATING SYSTEM" called WIN-DOS!!!!

motorola(freescale), ABANDONED a PERFECTLY GOOD CPU architecture to make RISC based CPUs. Meanwhile, they were making ALWAYS more expensive CPUs because their production volumes were lower, and now they go out on a limb, expecting everyone that bought into 680x0 computers and software to just leap over to MORE EXPENSIVE STILL (because it's) new hardware AND being stuck with ZERO asset value for their massive software acquisition over time TOO..... KISS OF DEATH --- IDIOCY!!!!!

And in the end, they could NEVER mass produce OR deliver on time, their CPUs proclaimed to be faster than the CPUs that were made by intel AND WHOSE CHIPS WERE AVAILABLE to the market.

BUT, it mattered NOT, EVEN IF they had made the CPUs on time AND had them available in quantity AND they were faster BECAUSE they were MORE EXPENSIVE. And even then, the drawback (a serious one) was crazy inflated software sizes that came with the technology.

When Hyeprion came on the scene, they were a decidedly SOFTWARE company. They had to go with a CPU that didn't exist --->advanced 680x0 CPUs, or PPC, where there was a history established, or cold start on 80x86 CPUs where endianness was a BIG issue too.

They chose PPC. I was 100% opposed to that, but as there was NOTHING ELSE AVAILABLE, I nonetheless, supported the idea. I bought an AmigaOne XE when it came out. Never have I thought that that was the wrong thing to do.

While that motherboard had some technical problems, it is 100% NOT Hyperion Entertainment's fault... It was 100% NOT Eyetech's (Alan Brickhouse) fault either!!!!

The FAULT and BLAME lie DIRECTLY at the feet of motorola(freescale).

THEY want to sell 500,000, 1,000,000 or 100,000,000 CPUs and YET, they DID NOT MAKE IT POSSIBLE for a motherboard that WORKS to EXIST. They figured "hey, ya gots da CPU, now off you go, piece o'cake".... DIDN'T THEY LOOK AND SEE THAT NO ONE WAS MAKING COMPUTERS WITH THEIR CPUs?????

IF they wanted CPUs that they make to be sold, they should have DONE SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Like make it EASY to do! THEY ARE THEIR OWN DOWNFALL... and took AMIGA with them!!!!! :-( :-( :-(

Hyperion Entertainment and Eyetech KEPT AMIGA ALIVE!

But, I do blame them for a big mistake.

Amiga Inc. and Eyetech and Hyperion should have realised that the BULK (80% +) of AMIGA users, what they REALLY wanted was OLD AMIGA made ANEW.

They wanted the BoXeR, the NatAmi, the Apollo Cored Vampire.... AmiJoe even!!!!

I'm getting what I want... WOOO HOOO!!!!

That's an outright LIE, wawa t! You chose to say it like that, but it's beyond stretching the truth, too.

I was banned by AmigaWorld.Net, as it was because I CHALLENGED THEM on the ALLOWANCE of people posting LIES in their POSTS!

The administrators were ALLOWING PEOPLE TO LIE in what they were posting on that website.

I GOT SICK OF IT and said "THEY GO OR I GO", so, what happened? I LEFT!!!!!! (Yeah, they kept the liars!)

So, wawa t, what other messageboards was I banned from?
